I think my map is in 2010 version, even it's a 2012 car, should I buy an update version? I have an iPhone 5 with unlimited data but still prefer the bigger screen on the car.

Toyota updates the maps every year in the September/October time frame. So the 2013 rev will be out shortly.

I updated mine after 3 years and it was worth it to me. The dealer can give you a file that gives changes state-by-state for each year.

How much did the update cost? I asked my maintenance "consultant" when I took my C for an oil change and he was clueless.

$169. Expensive but I like my Nav and the update contained all of the updates that I was looking for in NC.

That was for my 2010 so I am not sure about your 2012.

    Expensive is right ...

Is that $169 for a DVD you own and can update yourself or is that for a service to have the dealer flash the map update?

It is a DVD that I own and replaced the original DVD to update. You cannot update the DVD.

Didn't notice you had a "regular" Prius, and from what you said it sounds like your nav requires the map data DVD disc to be accessable at all times for nav to work. IIRC the c and new Toyota head units store maps & nav data in flash memory. That said, I'll revise the question - is the c's nav updated with a firmware-type update loaded from a DVD or USB stick one can buy, or is a flash update at the dealer's service department required?

It will probably be at least $200 here in Canada. Maybe I can eventually get it updated when I visit the USA.

I take it that means the dealer has to do it. Does one end up paying just the price of the update or does the dealer charge a labor rate on top of that to do the update?

Not sure if it's a hidden SD or part of the ROM. I honestly haven't looked, but I do know it's not a CD... or at least not a permanent CD.
