Ok, I feel kinda silly posting this, but... after reading several posts for $130 charges to reset the check engine light, I have to ask. Last weekend I filled up my new 2102 prius for the very first time and when I went to tighten the gas cap it would not click. At least not like my nissan and honda does. In those cars when I tighten the cap, it will click several times indicating that the torque is just right. So my question is, should the prius do the same thing? How loud are the clicks, and how many times does it click.?

    Thanks

It does click for me, but only once and immediately after the click it stops turning. I've had no problems so far with check engine lights related to this.

    One faint click--no ratchetting.

My 2008 Scion and 2013 Prius only click once when tightening the fuel cap. It says it right on the cap if you take a second to read.

I think the Toyota engineers figured the Prius already made enough strange noises that they didn't need to include a gas cap click. :)

The above are correct. As written on the cap, you tighten (increase torque) until you hear -one- click.

I tried but can't hear anything but the faint sound of the spring compressing as I struggle to turn in anticipation of a click. I am a under 30 yr old male 6 ft 165 lbs so I know its not the torque on the cap that's the problem. Don't want to break the gas cap so I'm not going to go any further. Don't like this because I live in NJ which is not a self serve state but full service so attendants may get reckless and snap the gas cap trying to turn the thing. They don't listen for 1 click but click click click click. Going to dealer to see what's up.

That's probably what happened. They turned the cap expecting to hear multiple clicks but the Prius cap only gives one. As long as you don't get a check engine warning you can live with it, but let the attendant know the next time.

P.S. - I have a real hard time letting anyone do anything to my car. You never know what will happen. This especially applies to valet parking.

Okay I just had my uncle come take a look at it and he just turned it really hard with both hands. I almost thought he was going to break my cap and then CLICK. We repeated the process three or four times and the cap loosened up a bit and now I can turn the cap pretty easily until like other posters state there is a faint click. When i was doing it I was only using one hand and I didn't want to go any further for fear of something snapping but the plastics/metal spring in the cap must be very stiff straight out of the factory and needs breaking in before working properly. I'm not normally this mentally handicapped but honestly I could not turn it that far the first time with just one hand and its counter intuitive to have to use both hands to torque a gas cap shut.

That does NOT sound normal. Perhaps it is worth getting a new one, either via warranty if applicable or just buying one. (They can't be that expensive)

If you read through the complete message they "fixed" it by torquing it. Now it works properly. Probably had some plastic flashing blocking proper operation.

If the cap wasn't doing its job, the car will let you know by a CEL.

It's also in the manual - just one click. Not very loud though.
