So I bought a new prius 3 about a week ago and it came with 3 months free sirius xm radio... now, will it just go off? How do they know when the 3 months is up? I did not register anything through sirius or enter a VIN number anywhere unless the dealer did it for me, but when I test drove the car, satellite radio was already on. So I guess I'm asking how do they know when I bought the car and when my 3 months should end?

When you approach the three months, you will start getting letters from Sirius with offers. Remember, you can get a better deal than the letters will offer for a year of Sirius. If you don't respond, the service will turn off. When you call them and cut a deal, they will turn it back on.

I think the 3 months start from when they activated it, so I'd call your dealership and inquire as to when they activated it because you don't want to be shorted out of your three months. And don't worry, xm will be calling or mailing you, they called me for every car I owned with xm over and over....

If you do renew it, there are current specials you can ask for when you call xm. 6 months for $27 plus taxes and fees and $86 for a year plus taxes and fees, they auto renew after a year at full price if you do not remember to call before hand.

Also, in some rare instances it just never gets shut off and continues to work so waiting may be a bit beneficial. It's just a mess up with xm sometimes...

Actually, I think the 3 months starts from when you took possession of the car. You can check your account on their website.

Several people have reported that XM never got around to shutting theirs off when it expired.

Hmm, makes sense I guess since xm gets notified of new owner info and date purchased. Ok, scratch calling the dealership lol.

I had reception problems and let it shut off after three months. They constantly called me to renew. I finally told them that I had a reception problem and the rep said that they could increase the signal... How could they increase the signal from a satelite?!? However, once I said that, they stopped calling...

Actually with my Subaru, the offer after 3 months was pretty good. 6 months for $25 I think, which if you search around, you'll find that is as cheap as you can go. I follow a thread on FatWallet that has the going rates people are able to get by asking when they renew. Some people call every 5-6 months and get the 6/25 or 5/25.

Personally I just did a year for about $100 for the Subaru. I believe that is still 50% off or so, and I deal with their customer service less. I have XM Premier I need to transfer to the Prius when I feel like wasting time on the phone. I've heard SiriusXM can make a simple transfer into quite the frustrating process for the end user.
