Brake Wear

    It is likely that many of the 2010 and 2011 Gen IIIs have now accrued a significant of mileage, so I am curious how everyone is doing in terms of brake wear.

    I have not checked my brake pads since the 30k service, so tonight, I pulled off the tires and did some measurements with a brake pad wear gauge.

    With 67,000 miles, my front pads are at 5mm (inner and outer, so wear is even) and my rear pads are at 6.5mm (inner and outer, no uneven wear issue with mine). Based on these findings, I will be needing new front brake pads by 90-100k. My 30k service showed 8mm on the front and rear pads.

    I admit to being a very hard driver, so I am not surprised to see this kind of wear. What are you folks finding?

    Are you driving your Prius around Laguna Seca?! Your wear is fast, but if you do drive aggressively then I suppose it is to be expected.

    To give you an older data point our GenII has over 110K miles on it, and the brakes look almost brand new. The rotors get rust spots on them every now and then so some low speed braking cleans it right up.

    78,000 miles and on my third set! Went through them every 30k in the taxi job but they've settled down nicely now.

    It all depends on the driving conditions and your style of driving.

    149,000K on our 2007 before replacing! Our driving is mostly Interstate though.

    I am nearly at 57,000 miles and it looks like my tires will need to be replaced before my brakes. I was wondering the same thing though. So, I am glad that you asked the question!

    If my driving habits do not change, I think I am on track to do my first brake job between 90-100k.

    I was told the same thing by the dealer. Also, the dealer said that at the rate I was using the brakes, they should last me close to 150K miles, but to keep a close eye on the brake pads once I approached the 100K mile mark. Don't want to rub metal on metal (been there, done that).

    Anybody know if it is any more difficult to change the rotors on a Prius vs. any other car? I changed the rotors on an Explorer, but the thought of doing the same on a Prius makes me think twice.
