I live in California where our power generation plants are some of the cleanest in the nation. You should do your research on your state before making a blanket general statement like that.

If burning gasoline was so clean, why do we have such a push for EVs in Southern California? It is to help keep our air clean and to reduce emissions.

Time to do some homework buddy.

One of my coworkers said the same thing to me. I explained to him that I was only getting 50 cents a day and he shut up.

I also told him if he didn't like it, go buy an EV and help contribute to cleaning up the air in Los Angeles. He said the cars were too expensive. HUNH....

As far as the problem with SUVs and big V8 ford pickup drivers... They were the losers ICEing the EV stations when they first started showing up last year in Los Angeles.

While you're being amazed, here's an even MORE amazing thought. Folks are never amazed that refineries need electricity made from dirty fossil fuel. They seem to not care that their fossil fuel cars use fossil fuels made at refineries that use dirty electricity that ALSO comes from burning dirty fossil fuel - just to MAKE the fossil fuel ... so that they can then burn fossil fuel in their non-plug-in cars. In other words, the straight fossil fuel burning cars burn even MORE fossil fuel then their plug-in counter parts.

Apparenly, folks that are "amazed" at plug-in's using dirty electricity, must think their refinery's electricity comes strictly from sunshine and children's laughter. Wish I could live in that amazing 'reality'.

Put another way, gas cars use more electricity than electric cars do.

    all,

I recently attended an EV Expo at Middlesex Community College in Middletown, CT. There was an array of electric cars in the parking lot including a Tesla, 3 Miev's (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle---both right hand & left hand drive), Honda Fit EV, Ford Fusion EV, Nissan Leaf, BMW EV (one of only 100 in the world right now), & some Toyota SUV equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell. I understand that there is now a Smart Car EV too. Even though this event was for BEV's only (Battery Electric Vehicle), there were also 3 Chevy Volts, but sadly no other hybrids (not even a Prius Plug-In). There were a few privately owned hybrids in the public parking area, but not in the Expo area

Inside the building there was a room set up with representatives of the state with their charging stations map, local electrical contractors who will set up your home with a properly installed charging station to meet code, & corporate public charging station installation companies. One off these companies has an unusual twist that is innovative & deserves a little extra attention. Their station uses a hollow square tube extending upward/outward at a 45 degree angle from it's ground mounting plate (for street or lot parking). At the top of that square tube is a box containing a retracting charging cord, so there is never any power cord on the ground to trip over or cause electrical shock hazard on wet or snowy ground. Having the 45 degree angle boom also makes parking almost a non-issue depending on where your car's plug port is (you can parallel park with easy access to either side of the car, or in standard parking spaces you don't have to back in if your charging port is in the rear). Also, there is less chance of vandalism or cutting off the cord for its copper content with the 45 degree boom because you can't pull the cord down until you swipe an ID or credit card (then there's a record of whose card got swiped last). They also do ceiling mounted retractable set-ups for your home garage or public parking garages.

All in all, a pretty nice event except a severe thunderstorm sent all the outside vendors/exhibitors scrambling to pack up & leave just a little while before the scheduled end of the event. One interesting thing I found out about the Nissan Leaf is that in the port under their tilt up charging door are 2 types of plug connectors [J-1772 (for 120/240V charging) on one side & CHADeMo (for the 480V fast charging) on the other side].

Hi Ken, one other neet thing about CHADeMo - the U.S. made champion EV, the Tesla, is a Chademo QC member. Apparently, the Japanese go ape over all cars fast, like the Model S, and so Japan has begun to import them. Well as it turns out ... the SAE quick charger (went to great lengths to come into existence, most likely just to derail Chademo) doesn't exist in Japan - but TONS of Chademo QC's exist. Thus - not only does the Model S get Chademo in Japan - the "reverse engineer" project has begun ... iow, an adapter is being worked on, so that Chademo can be used on Model S here in the U.S.

Next? I smell a Chademo to Tesla Super charger adapter !!

Wrong!!! And I have no solution to your predictable discomfort!

Fossil burning power plants generate more "Green house gases" you must be from californi-a!

They're the same ones blocking the EV stations here now too
I like to call them "the special people" because they're more important then anyone else and they're in a hurry and don't need to pay attention to silly rules like speed limits, stop signs, etc... and don't need to consider that they share the roadway (and parking lots) with others.

It should be pretty simple. If you have permission to charge then it should not be an issue.

Again... it's just ignorance and jealousy at play.
Someone posted a note on my windshield once that said I should not be charging at a public Chargepoint station- and that I could be towed/ticketed and even charged with theft (of electricity) if I continued use the free public Chargepoint station for which I have an access card.

Why should anyone have a "free plug in station"? Someone has to pay for it.

It's not anymore free than the roads one drives on are free. Lots of people don't own cars. Why do we get to drive on roads for free?

No, blanket statements not supported by facts are flawed.

The "nothing is free" was my point. My tax dollars pay for the privilege. Just as yours. I don't want my money used to "subsidies" anyone 'mode of transportation.

Yes, no one challenging "nothing is free". But your tax dollars do not pay for the privilege. Taxes (gasoline) collected for road infrastructure pay less than 50% cost, so it is subsidized. That doesn't even account for the negative externalities, so it is very heavily subsidized.

    <ocd> That would be "subsidize."

So then you are pretty much against all bus and rail transportation in the US because it is virtually all supported by tax payers. Right?

Correct.. subsidize my commute..until then pay your own way and let me keep my money. I could do far far better things with my money than you/him/her or the Gov can.

Oh, okay. The taxpaying base pays for your privilege but not for ours. Seems legit.
