I currently have 92K miles on my 2008. I've been pretty OCD on maintenance, most of which has been done by myself. In the 92K miles, I've only had to replace the ICE water pump because it was leaking which was covered under my 100K mile Toyota Platinum warranty.

    Questions:

    1. Would there be anything wrong with me asking my dealership (which I've rarely visited) to do a very detailed inspection of my Prius to see if anything needs replaced/fixed under warranty BEFORE I hit 100K miles?

    2. I've read about aftermarket re-manufactured traction batteries and how the original factory installed traction battery goes bad after 5 years/100K miles. What are the odds my battery will fail around 100K miles? Are there any statistics on the Gen II traction batteries and how long they typically last? Is there any way possible to test the "health" of the traction battery with a special tool?

Is there a better option than just replacing it with the same exact battery and technology? Is lithium an option at all?

I believe you're at least partially confusing the traction battery with the 12v battery. The 12v battery almost universally lasts about 5-7 years, not really dependent on mileage. The traction battery will last until it dies, the number I see thrown around for the life of the battery/car is 150-180k miles. It could die sooner or last a lot longer. I wouldn't worry about it until your mileage drops for no reason or the battery SOC fluctuates wildly.

Ok to have you car inspected by the dealer for recalls and any problems covered under warranty before expiration.

If you still have the original 12 Volt small battery you may need to replace soon. They last 5 years but can go longer. Best to replace no fun getting stuck. Costs about $200 plus labor to install

The big battery traction can go 10 plus years and over 150,000 miles however some fail earlier if they were driven hard. Most last a long time. Rebuilt one costs $1,800

You may want to replaced transaxle fluid. Dealer charges $100. Good precaution to give the transmission long life.

100,000 mile is major tune up new spark plugs. It is 120,000 miles on the newer cars so check your maintenance schedule

This is a link on the dcussion. The cost is about $700

Pcv valve may need to be changed not that expensive when you can.

Thanks. I do mean traction battery. Not 12V.

I actually replaced my 12V last year with an Optima Yellow Top (wanted the best). I replaced my transaxle fluid (super easy to do, don't know why anyone would pay the stealership to do that) at 60K. I replaced my spark plugs and PCV at around 90K because I just felt like doing it a little early, again, super easy to do myself.

I was just thinking about taking it to the dealership PRIOR to 100K to replace parts while they were still under warranty. Anyone do that?

Good to know you are on top of that. I would bring it in if it were my car. Call the service advisor and discuss

What's your opinion on getting the brake fluid changed at 100K miles? Mine looks very clean at 92K.

I'm very unsure if I should change out my ICE and Inverter coolant. Like I said before, my ICE water pump was replaced and I forgot to mention that my Inverter was also replaced at around 82K miles due to a recall free of charge. In doing these two replacements, I'm wondering if the coolant in both loops was replaced.

I've not heard of that. The dealer will only look for trouble codes. They don't know about NiMH chemistry or battery life prospects. They don't have a test that says anything about the HV battery, just fault codes. Same for everything else in the car not under recall.

Considering that once you have changed all the fluids (with the inverter pump recall they were supposed to put in new fluid), you should be fine for a long time. Brake fluid can last a long time in the Prius, due to its minimal stress from regen braking. You can get test strips to tell how it is doing, and judge from that info if it needs replacement.

Hobbit did this test at 100K miles

    100K maint - 1

and found the brake fluid was indeed OK.

What can the dealer look at that you cannot? Very little actually. Get a flashlight and go over the car in detail looking all hoses, wiring, and anywhere a leak can show up. You can even take off the wheels to look at the brakes and bearings closely.

The thing to have the dealer check for is if all recall actions (if any) have been performed. For them to fix something under warranty, it has to be broke or you need to point out what is wrong. That requires you to find it first.

I'm just wondering if I'm skilled enough to be able to find a potential problem. I can check for leaks, but beyond that I'm not so sure.

I just did a check under the hood and didn't find any leaks or anything loose. However, I did find a very large walnut in a tight space just under the windshield washer reservoir which makes me think it was hidden by some furry creature for a later meal. This is odd b/c my Prius has been garage kept since day one. Must have happened when I was out somewhere. Who knows how long it's been there.

Think of how many dealers would have found the walnut. You are already better than some auto technicians I have encountered.
