i recently purchased a 2007 prius with 87k miles on it. the engine seems to run rough and when its sitting in park idling it will feel like its kicking, and when it kicks off it also makes the same feeling until it is sufficiently warmed up. my 2004 prius did not do this and it had over 200k on it. is this a new thing with the newer models?

    No.

I suggest that you replace the iridium spark plugs with the correct NGK or Denso plugs (per the owner's manual) and clean the throttle body interior and throttle plate. Also replace the engine oil and oil filter, using 5W-30 viscosity oil.

i just purchased the car and it had the oil changed and slightly over filled so there was some oil in the intake manifold but i cleaned that up and drained the excess oil out. i doubt the plugs are fouled with only 87k miles. the filter is fine and the oil viscosity is 5w-30

Any codes stored ? You could have a ignition system misfire.

no actually. no lights, no codes, nothing. it actually runs perfectly fine aside from when the engine is first started after sitting over night. it just kicks about like a rough running car or a car with a bad engine mount.

There's always oil there at the bottom of the TB. Thats normal. Don't believe me check it again in 500 miles. There will be oil there. Don't worry about that.

But Pats right. You don't know what the last guy did how long it sat etc. I always go through a used car. Start with a clean slate so to speak.New trans fluid (your due) new plugs (like diesel says inspect the ignitor boots carefully and look for rust in the spark plug well etc) , new ice coolant, new inverter coolant etc.

Its all very very cheap if you can do it yourself.

Sounds like a champ to me. Make sure the Hybird battery is changed up in the blue when your listening to the engine.

My mint 07 low mile sometimes runs a little rough and kicks now and again since new. And it clunks hard when the motor shuts off while sitting. Its normal. There's probably nothing wrong with your engine your just paying attention to it as its new to u and all the sounds it makes and this car makes ALOT of sounds.

But it looks like the Inverter coolant is not making alot of turbulance or could be the camera angle. With the car in ready take the cap off and check for real good agitation in the Inverter reservoir reflecting good pump circulation. Take a video of that.

If it's happening over night, it could be a coolant leak into one or more of the cylinders.
It could also be a leaking fuel injector(s). The best way to narrow it down would be to monitor
misfires on a cold start and see if one or more cylinders are reporting excessive misfires. That will
give you a starting point to do a few tests. Isolation of the faulty cylinder(s) is the key point at this stage.

Okay! You still need to monitor misfires while it's happening to narrow it down to the faulty cylinder(s)

Small amounts of coolant can easily go undetected

here is a better video of the sounds it is making. it sat over night and i started it today and did this video. i also took a shot of the inverter coolant tank. it is not a massive turbulent flow but it is moving

Sounds exactly like mine. Except around 1:21 where you pulled back and then sounds like it has a knocking sound but that may be the camera mic. Is that what you mean? That knocking? I hear no misfire. Sounds perfect to me.
Want to test for misfire? Take it out and accelerate hard a few times. Put fresh oil in it first.

OTOH, you have very poor circulation in the Inverter coolant tank IMHO. Thats a dying pump or really old fluid.
I would change the Inverter coolant asap.
It should have much more aggressive turbulence than that. Was your I pump replaced under the TSB recall?

the pump was not replaced according to the dealership. i just have to take it over there tomorrow and have them examine it. that slight knocking/growl only happens when the engine is first started. it goes away after its driven a little bit and the engine is warmed up. acceleration is quiet and smooth except when you let off the gas and switch to coast/or electric you feel like a jerk when the gas engine kicks off. but otherwise it seems fine.

best thing to do is try to find another gen II to test drive to see if something is wrong or you're just not used to it.

well i had a 2004 and it didnt seem to act like this one does. i bought it used and it has always been maintained according to the service records at the dealership. and only having 87k miles the car is basically a infant.

Reposting defrankond posting from another thread....

-----------------I recently traded my 07 off with 98k miles due to engine knocking. The stealers hip told me the engine needed to be replaced and I not having the money to do that I traded it off on a 2010. After a week I went back to the dealer my 2007 was sitting on the lot with the service order on the seat. The engine wasn't replaced but noted in the comment section was cleaned EGR port valves for engine knock. The car ran flawlessly. Needless to say I was pissed that I was taken advantage of by the dealership and by the time the manager got back to me the car had sold.

This is puzzling reading this, since second gen Prius do not have an EGR valve, I wonder what exactly was cleaned? I have cleaned the inside of a rubber hose that goes between the pcv valve and the intake, filled almost with black tar like substance, next time I'll probably replace that hose, but didn't notice difference when driving, I have a slight engine knock when accelerating and when cold to around 140 F. engine temp. Engine is at about 350 k , has done this for years.
