I think I know the answer to this, but I'm not sure.

What is better for Prius fuel economy (assuming a trip beyond pure EV range):
    A) driving with the fan on (not the a/c, mind you - just the fan) or
    B) driving with the windows open?

I'm pretty sure the answer is "A." What makes me hesitate is that whenever I turn on the fan, I lose about a half a mile of estimated EV range.

    Thanks

Low speed, open window. High speed, windows up. You don't need aerodynamics much at low speed, but ya sure want it at higher speeds.

It is just estimated EV range, the car just thinks you are going to use Air or heat so it is just guessing at EV range, Just ignore it. Not a big thing! :)

But just remember thats comming from someone that hates to loose even 1/1000 mile of EV range! :p

Thanks for posting this. It does seem there is a subtle influence because of the EV storage numbers to not use the fan. Since my driving is mixed freeway/nonfreeway, I will have to remember to not treat the fan as a pariah at the higher speeds.

    Just a comment.

Your battery is in the passenger compartment with you to keep it cool on hot days. A/C for you also helps your battery last longer. Do not skimp on A/C if you feel uncomfortable, you are lessening the life of your battery.

Now, for lower temps, I agree with Paradox.

(I get about a week each in fall and spring when rolling the windows down sounds good)

Any idea at what point AC is necessary to preserve battery? 70f, 75f, 80f ?? Or anytime the ambient temp is above 65f.

That comment was made by someone that doesn't own a PiP and hasn't watched PiP battery temps closely on a scangauge/torque device. The chemistry of the PiP battery doesn't get near as hot during use as the batteries in all the other Prii.

So as long as you can handle the temp in the car, the battery can as well. (given that you aren't abusing the battery)

I would guess those are all way low. Those areas where HV battery life appears reduced have 'in the shade' temps over 100 F.

Once it is over 90 F, I quit using ECO mode as I want the battery to cool off quickly when I start driving. (Yesterday, it was over 90 from 11 AM to 7 PM here. Searching your location, it may be you never need to worry about temps over 100 F, 90s may be rare. )
