Hi All, I'm trying to join the Prius family. I have been a long time VW buyer...I've been looking at 2010 IV's and V's. I have someone that wants to sell me a 2010 Silver Prius V with every option except solar for $16,500. It has 80,000 miles on it. Good deal or not a good deal?

I'd have a hard time paying that much for any 80000 mile car,,,just my opinion. Have you checked KBB?

Correction 76,000 miles if that makes any difference. KBB says Excellent $17,648; Very Good $17,098; Good $16,498; Fair $14,798

Way too much money. You can buy a NEW 2013 Two for about $21,500. You don't really NEED the extras anyway.

I really just want the leather or soft text leather seats. Navigation I guess I can use my phone and the solar option can be corrected with aftermarket remote start. Bluetooth would be somewhat nice and adaptive cruise I could care less for. Thoughts?

I guess it seems like most folks interested in Prius tend to find those that have less than 60k miles used, because their value appears to plunge after that and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to buy one with 100k or so miles unless you can get in it for around $10,000. Does that sound about right? If I can get into a Prius that has been well maintained with a 100,000 or so miles at a low low price (say $10k), would that be a bad idea for the long term?

Offer him $10,000. Show him the good KBB, but let him know the battery does not have much life left. let him know you can get a 2013 for $20,000. If he counter offers $11,000 take it, if he does not thank him for his time and give him his best and final offer $11,000

Thanks JMD! I'll give that a shot. So, 2010's that have over 100k shouldn't be going for much over $10k?

It's up to you. It is all a negocation. Just get that puppy look face a let em know a new one costs $20,0000 and the dealer is discounting another few grand and offering zero percent financing. Let him know his car has high mileage and will require about 4-5 grand in repairs including the main traction battery costs $3,500 and the Inverter is another $1,500 to $2,000. Ask him if he ever changed the transmission fluid. That goes at 100,000 miles give or take and costs another $3,000. Tell him you think a car with these many miles is worth $10,000 because of the deferred repairs and you got to pay sales tax. You willing to go the highest 11,000. If he says no, thank him for his time and tell him to call you if he changes his mind.

KBB says the car is worth $15,000 in fair condition and back out the repairs. The dealer offers a Toyota Platinum Warranty on certified used cars and his private party sales offers no warranty.

Than think about buying the new car

You rock, thanks for the tips. So, based on the summer incentives maybe buying new is the best plan.

    Shouldn't wouldn't couldn't

    depends when where what

    80,000 at 72+mph are different then 80,000 at 55-mph
200 prii in a lot might not garner as much per unit as 1 prius in a lot
    Gas isn't gettin cheaper

You didn't say if it was a Prius 4 or 5, regardless, the battery will NOT go bad at 100,000 miles. The transmission will NOT go out at 100,000. The inververter will NOT go bad at 100,000 miles. I sold my 2006 Loaded Prius with 120,000 miles a year ago for $10,000 and never had a problem with it. Wish I hadnt sold it, that is why I bought another. I didnt have any issues with it. Many will go 200,000 miles plus. No one on this forum would SELL you their 2010 Prius 4 or 5 80,000 mile car for $10,000 when they spent $25,000+ for it. No dealer would sell you that car for anywhere near $10,000. If you could buy it for $13-14,000 it would be a steal in my opinion, especially if the paint and interior are in excellent condition. And people who say extra features are not important are very wrong (again my opinion). Just ask the number of level 4 and 5 owners on this forum. The leather and power seats are way more comfortable and adjustable than the standard seat. Don't just take my word for it, check other opinions. The nav is useful. Bluetooth is useful. For you to get a NEW level 4 would cost you almost $26,000 and a level 5 near $27500. Quite a bit more than $13,000 (if you can get it for that) no matter how you look at it. Offering him him to drop his price from $16,500 to $10,000 is a rude insult. He could get at least $12,000 from a dealer. Anyone want to sell me their 2010 Prius 4 or 5 for $10,000? I didn't think so. Bottom line is would you rather spend $13-15000 for used or 25-$30,000 for new. Get a Prius 4 or 5 if at all possible.

No one dropped dead from trying. Certainly you can come back with a better offer if you want, or purchase a new lower model for $21 K + Tax zero miles.
You may consider a Toyota Certified with a warranty if you go used and are paying the tourist price.

    I agree with this.

The deal the seller is offering is not UNDENIABLY great. It's somewhere between fair..and a little on the high side.

And buying a used car, especially if it's a private party, where you are likely to NOT have a warranty, and maybe even a disingenuous representation of the vehicles past...(maybe)...is always about negotiation.

Make an offer that is more than fair for yourself. Ask for the moon, and see what it gets you. A first offer is not a final offer.

Plus all the usual caveats and suggestions would apply. Car Fax? Past records? Take it to a Toyota Dealership to be checked out BEFORE purchase...

A huge risk and disadvantage of buying used is often NOT knowing the history of the vehicle.

But I wouldn't feel bad about making a more modest offer. I don't feel the price is so great that it's a slam dunk, you must get the car in your garage at that price move.

Your right, no one dropped dead, but the seller may have felt like killing you (because of the insult). Offering $10 grand is rude, but than I guess some people feel it's ok.

Phht....you're making a car deal. The seller is selling...you are potentially buying. Unless you fart directly in the sellers face while making the offer, it's not about an "insult" or "rude". The seller has all the freedom in the world to simply say, "No, I feel that offer is too low". Then you move on from that point if you wish.

Not everyone selling a used car is 100% honest either. You don't really get the luxury of not feeling insulted in either direction. You have to approach it as trying to do the best for yourself, as buyer or as seller. It's not really about maintaining some false and potentially dangerous sense of protocol or decorum. Nobody should feel insulted by a posted price, or a tendered offer.

I politely disagree with you. There is a point where a ridiculously low offer is rude. Is it $10,000, $5000, $5? You may as well offer $5 . Not only that, but it is a waste of time for both parties because you will alienate the seller. Crazy offers makes you look like a jerk. Some degree of protocol (respect) IS important unless you a neanderthal. Obviously you think any negotiating behavior is ok if you are "making a deal, except "farting in the sellers face?" Is that what you are saying? Hopefully not! all people don't think this way. Maybe I am misunderstanding you.
