During one of my long trips I happened to get a puncture in my tire on late saturday night and didn't really have any choice but to drive on a donut in order to get back to my home on time to make it to work the following day.

In a nutshell, I drove around 1k on the donut at 70+ speeds (yes, I know the warnings about distance and speed limits but meh, what's a spare tire compared to keeping my job?) One thing I noticed is that despite some people saying the spare is the same outer diameter as the original tires, this isn't entirely true. Yes they are more narrow and they are very close to the same size diameter but once you put it on the car under the load it actually sinks more than the full size tires so the diameter is inherently smaller. Well, this is what happens when you install it on the rear and drive like I did,

Brings me to my question, does anyone recommend any full size spare or "semi-full" size spare? Or should I just get another donut?

i don't think a full size will fit in the well? never heard of a semi full.

Yeah full size won't fit well because it's too wide for the trunk space. Toyota fail.
As for semi-full I was thinking something that was the same size but just more narrow like for example a 165/65R15 would be more narrow but should be pretty close to the standard tire size.

is it the diameter that won't fit into the well, or the width? i suppose the width if the compact is the same diameter. if that's the case, if you can find a width narrow enough to fit in the well and still fit the wheel, i suppose it's a better option if you plan on using it a lot.

Kinda both but it's mostly the width that's the issue. I could shove the full size tire into the well but it sticks up too much to put the trunk storage back in. I was wondering if anyone ever replace their own spare with anything different that'll be more useful since I tend to take long trips.

Interesting. Was the spare tire pressure at 60 psi or some lower value?

I suggest you replace the tire with another similar donut so that it will fit in the available space.

It was at 60-62 psi. Probably can't handle a fully loaded car very well.

Yeah I was thinking about just getting another donut too. Discount Tires wanted $171 to replace the spare. For that price, it better come with a lifetime of donuts. Instead I found a few on craigslist.

with pip, no spare, so some of us have purchased new or used. we have to tie them down on top of the deck.

The spare is a temporary use tire. It's not made to use as a replacement for more than that. It's main design features are weight and space savings. It's designed to get you someplace safe to repair or replace the regular tire. It's not balanced
and high speeds will kill it, as you have found out. I would get another space saver and use it as designed. I carry a tire plug kit with a small compressor and haven't used a spare in 20 years
