The lower price is really good. You should shoot for that price. I got it through a friend who has a friend with a shop.

I just bought a 2013 prius with navigation. I am wanting to upgrade the head unit to the Alpine INE-Z928HD.
If you do not mind where did you buy yours and what did it cost? Also has yours been reliable and is it easy to use?
    Thanks, Priuslovers.

GPS doesn't have a lock when you're in a tunnel, maybe some city streets, extreme weather....The speed sensor, and gyroscope, will allow the unit to approximately determine your location and update same on your map. You enter a tunnel and you lose satellite reception. Some navigation systems assume you're driving the speed limit, driving your current speed or just keep you at the location where you lost reception until satellite reception is re-acquired. Speed sensor is a better solution. Keeps your location current.

Thanks, although the actual instructions do not say I need to hook it up, so I probably won't.

As for the HU, I can't really say anything about it until I get the right wiring harness and get it all hooked up. I think I'll be done by next Sunday, I hope.

I just checked online. There is a June 2013 update available for US maps. I did notice that some updates have to be paid for through Naviextras.com, but there are some free updates.

Does anybody have an answer about which features will be lost with an aftermarket nav? The "Car" button features still function with aftermarket? Setup controls?

I'm not sure which functions you mean. I had the stock no frills radio that comes with the Prius II, so I upgraded. I finally hooked up the rear camera, and everything works fine. The Steering wheel controls for the volume and channels work fine. The Bluetooth, NAV, and Rear camera are new to me.

I bought a PAC TR7 to bypass the video lock, but it doesn't do what it's supposed to do, so it's either defective, or I did something wrong. So that is my last issue. BTW, I didn't buy the TR7 to bypass the video lock, it is just too hard for me to tap the parking and foot brake wires. If I knew where to tap into them downstream from the switches, I wouldn't need the TR7.

So, right now, I have to manually give pulses to the wires to be able to change any settings on the HU. But since I've already done that, I am set. For me, the new settings were to change the color from Blue to Green to match the Prius dash colors, set the bass, treble, etc, and set up the correct camera choice from the factory setting to the Aux setting. Oh, since I haven't installed the TR7 or the wires directly to the brakes, I can't use the video function at all, since it won't play unless it recognizes that the vehicle is not moving. So I do have to install it one day, as soon as I figure out what's wrong with the TR7........

Try calling Alpine direct. They were helpful and may be able to answer your question.
