I had to look up that engine. Here are more details.
Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R Concept Revealed, Comes With TMG-Tuned Engine

I read that and do a face palm. Either I don't understand something, or toyota doesn't. I don't get the yaris as the platform. Its light, but far from designed to be a well handling car. They just made a well handling car the scion fr-s, why not use that as a platform. I don't get 1.6L 300hp, that is going to suck gas when pushed. Why not at least a 2L, BMW only pushes their 2L to 240hp in most production cars. We do have a hint on why they needed the ultra cap.

If you are going to store 100 hp to drive the other set of wheels in a light car, a super cap is much lighter than adding the 7kwh or so of lithium batteries. In the yaris they wouldn't fit anyway.

What you dont get is that TMG is developing Yaris for WRC as well as 1.6l Race engine to power it. So they paired that with hybrid system from their hybrid race cars to create a concept vehicle.

Obviously it is something that can be easily googled, I am not sure why would you think that Toyota is doing something that doesnt make sense but ok :)
