I came from a 1996 Jeep GC fully loaded. The Prius is a step up in the obvious mpg and being fun to drive. The rides are different though probably equivalent. The Jeep was a softer ride and the Prius is a harder ride with the inflated tire pressure. I like the ride of the Prius.

I miss the ability of being able to carry a 4' by 8' sheet of lumber. The Prius has been able to carry everything else though and I have a son with a pickup truck !

Overall I would have to say the Prius is a step up in my opinion.

My first Prius was a step up from a Subaru Forester, twice the MPG and quieter, calmer. On my second Prius, I wish I had 3 door SKS like the first one.

Mine is a work car....so it's more like a step "over" rather than up or down.

YMMV, but I would presume that a chat room for Prius owners isn't going to be the most objective audience for this question..... ;)

It for me was a step down from a Solara Convertible, loved that car, but had I kept it, I would have $3000 less in my pocket because of the gas savings (of course I'm out $15k- 21k for the Prius-6k for the old Solara) .

Step up for me. I had a Nissan Altima 2006. My Prius is more funny to drive and "zen" .

i carried a queen boxspring and mattress which is bigger than the plywood along with a dresser, two nightstands and a storage rack (all Ikea) and took it 48 miles down the freeway (a "bit" under the speed limit)

so its really all in what you "want" to do with your Prius.

thousands of posts here detailing what a Prius can haul and the main overriding theme of them all? the ONLY limitation is the owner, not the car

Step up from the car I traded ('02 Mazda Protege5) in everything but handling. Step up from the other car I own ('09 Mazda5) in everything but seating and cargo capacity.
