Pressed on the gas pedal a bit too hard yesterday and instead of pulling over and rebooting, I just attained a bit more speed and put her in neutral and let the car glide to the next stop repositioning back into drive for the last 200 Ft, for regen. I did this for the next 4 blocks. And.... Ended up with only ONE Bar of 25 mpg, all the rest were 100mpg bars..suburban speeds only. This was only a 2 . 5 mile local trip. Speeds : 40 MPHr.
Andy, But did it stop the ICE? Or did the ICE finish warming up? I approach 2 stop lights that sometimes are RED after I accidentially turn on the ICE. This gives me a chance to Stop, then re-Start the PIP, turning off the ICE.
Mmjj I think the ICE continued its warmup, but, never showed this. The fact that I now had only one .25 bar leads me believe, the ICE was still running with a very much minimized load = " " " " . Normally I will have 2-3 bars of varying and improving Mpg. Going into neutral changed the screen readout. Yes, I normally reboot using the same procedure you use, even going so far as to pull off the road and restart. It might prove educational if more people would try this, then we could form a consensus as to it's validity.
guys, don't forget it's late august. today i accidentally accelerated too hard. ICE shut off less than 60 seconds later because it was 85+ degrees outside.
I was thinking the same thing. Since the ICE would use so little gas, is it really worth wasting time pulling over and reboot? Not to mention risking getting hit by some drunk driver

I've read that not allowing the ICE to finish warming up is a bad idea. It only uses a tiny bit of gas to do it's warm-up thing, I'd rather not take the chance of hurting the engine.
I'm with you Ken. It is so worth that tiny little bit of gas to ensure that you aren't hurting the engine at all. Even if there is a slight chance the engine could be hurt in some small way it still seems like a no brainer.
. Where did you read this Ken? Also using my method as described in Post # 1 , I have no conclusive evidence that the engine was not running. In trying to duplicate what I did the first time, I noticed that each time I returned the car to EV, the screen showed the engine running. I still suspect I just Iightened the load on the ICE.
The discussion centers on continuing in EV as long as possible. When in EV the engine is not running! That must be terribly hard on the poor thing. Are you inferring I don't have a brain?
. Yes, It is about returning to ev when the driver inadvertently goes into Hv, however barring that option, is it possible to just let the car stay in Hv but still show good economy on the consumption, then letting the car return to ev, by it self automatically.
Can you explain how the ICE would be hurt? Remember that the ICE is being babied in the Prius all the time compared to the jerkiness of a regular car engine getting started. Regular cars get fuel injected into them when the engine isn't really ready for it and the oil has just started pumping. And in the PIP the ICE gets used even more infrequently than a regular Prius. Yes, I wouldn't do it every day, 5 times a day. But I wouldn't worry about it once every week or so. Remember what it was like in a regular car when the engine was hot and you shut it off and it dieseled. That is hurting the engine. Not allowing the ICE to always warm up probably just doesn't allow the catalytic converter to get up to its efficient temperature. Is it actually hurting anything. Don't know. But burning gas to heat it up then turning it off doesn't seem to make sense emissions wise. While it is warming up it is emitting bad stuff anyway. While the ICE is warming up the MG2 is spinning the engine smoothly and oil is pumping nicely. Mike
Wouldn't more condensation build up when you don't even run the ICE at all? I could be wrong...but why does moisture only appear once you start the ICE but only for a little while? Mike
