2010 vs 2013 tail lights

    Ok I did a couple of searches and to my surprise no talk about this. Sorry if this is an old topic. if so please link it thanks :)

    I am looking into swapping my 2010 tails for the newer versions. Seems there is allot of different people with different tastes that like the old over the new. However for me I wonder if there is some sort of technical aspect of the first gen 3 models that are better than the new tails? Some thing I do not know about? I wanted to know before I chose to do a swap.

    I have to admit that I didn't initially care for the double hockey stick appearance of the new tail lights.

    However, it has grown on me. ;)

    I especially like the clear lenses on the Prius Plug in. :D

    The one advantage I see that the new tail lights have over the old style is the LEDs are pointing straight out of the assembly. The LEDs in the 2010/2011 tail lights are actually hidden when viewed straight on and they are pointing to the side. What we see are only the reflected light from the LEDs. :eek:

    Ic ic interesting observation on the LED's. I see that as an advantage. I am the same way as they grew on me. Man I REALLY like the clear plugins! I would very much prefer them over the red ribbons. But if I had a plug in I would no way trade them lol.

    I'm the opposite and really disliked the 2010 tails vs the 2013 tails.

    Yes I like the 2013 better as well. The 2010/11 are to reminiscent of the prev. gen to me.

    I am anxious to trade them out with some one in SoCal lol.

    i kind of like the new lights too, please keep us informed if you change them about how did it go, did they just straight out swap like did they fit right in without any change and also if you get any good deal on them buying.

    The 2010 and 2013s are direct swap, no changes to the wiring required.

    Initially I thought the same but the newer lamps grew on me.. at night, the 2012 lamps are def. nice!

    Yes, at night they definitely look good.

    During the day, I prefer the clear tails of the PIP and the 2010/2011 over the red hockey sticks.

    I Swapped my 2011 Tail lights with an awesome fella we met through here, for his 2013's, and we both couldn't be happier. The 2013's look great on my Black 2011, and the 2011's look really good on his Winter Grey?? 2013. It's a personal preference, and we both love the swap.

    So was 2012 1st year of rear led lights? I'm shopping for a used Prius and like led, so curious of how here they start and differences in years (and models in years?).

    The 2010/11 were more similar to the prev. gen tails. the 2012/13 were a big departure. I liked them but I did not like the red plastic with my car color. I ended up getting the Prius Plug In ones. Clear and clean. Less red with the winter grey plus it to me was allot less like the 2nd gen and that was great.

    Here are comparisons for you. These are the 2010/11

    HUGE thank you! Excellent. Thanks for the pics of the 'Plug in' tail lights you added! These are from a 2013? ( do 2012 & 2013 have the same LED tail lights? (Plug ins' being more white and Reg Gen III's being more red)

    If anyone is in the mood to post pics of their 201o/2011 and 2012/2013 led tail lights, that would be Very informative. The night and day shots are super helpful.

    Infini, I see now your original and new. Plus, DUH, I went to Toyota site to see more pics. (I may be slow, but I do poor work.... ;o)
