Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R – Pricing and detailed specs TBA at Frankfurt.

The Yaris Hybrid-R is a supermini concept like nothing else on the planet. Based on a completely reworked three-door production model, the Yaris Hybrid-R harnesses Toyota’s racing hybrid technology in a powertrain that develops more than 400 hp. First off, how in the hell do you fit a 400 hp capable engine into a Yaris and second, how do you put it to the ground? Read on to find out!

The powertrain consists of a 1.6L Global Race Engine and two powerful electric motors that give the car intelligent electric all-wheel drive (AWD). It also makes use of a supercapacitor to absorb regenerative braking energy just like Toyota’s TS030 Hybrid race car.

The engine is a turbocharged I4 with direct injection, developed by Toyota Motorsport (TMG). While the engine drives the front wheels, each rear wheel is powered by a 60 hp electric motor, similar to the traction motor used in the standard European Yaris or North American Spec Prius c Hybrids.

In combination, the hybrid powertrain produces an over the top 414 hp! The two electric motors work as generators when during braking, and provide massive acceleration when the recovered energy is released.

  2. Great, 400 hp in a light/tiny car means lots of acceleration. Now if they dump the heavy-arse battery and 10 miles of cable for the hybrid system then you've got an even lighter car and higher high-speed fuel economy, all for less money!

Anything that makes use of a "supercapacitor" is something I'd like to own. On a serious note though, it almost sounds too dangerous.. So much power in such a small platform is asking for trouble. However, I could see how that sort of car would be a racecar driver's dream. Instant torque off the line, huge amounts of power in a little platform, and could easily run in marathons since it gets great mileage!

What is this "too dangerous" of which you speak?

over 400HP in a small car just doesn't sound safe to me. Granted, most folks wouldn't be stupid with it but I can already picture hearing about how dangerous they are, just begging for punk kids to race them.. A modern day Supra if you will.

Will most people abuse this? No. But it's the few that ruin it for the masses

The few ruin things for the masses because we allow it to happen.

Unsafe is a state of mind. There are people that feel out of their safe zone even when making jell-o.

My first streetbike was a CB1100F. I got a learner's permit for it. I'm still alive decades later.

Darwin rules are in effect. I'm ok with that.

I agree 100%. I personally think we should take the warning labels off of things and let stupid fix itself.

The problem lies with driving an overpowered car on a public road. Innocent people die all the time due to someone else's incompetence. I was just commenting that a car the size of our C with over 400 ponies would be seemingly easy for someone to kill themselves or others with. Not trying to hate on the concept car, I think it would be great to see a sporty hybrid. Hopefully Toyota will spark a market for one as other auto makers haven't been successful (CR-Z for example).

great 400+hp as if you need that.

40,0hp would be better for my needs = i hope smaller ice and better MPG

The gas pedal is not an on/off switch. There are degrees of engagement.

    Some comparative horsepower/weight ratios:

The current C - 27.5 lbs/hp - with my fat butt driving. Quarter mile times irrelevant.
    My '98 Z28 - 9.85lbs/hp - Fun. Low 13's quarter mile.
My ancient KZ1100 - 7.4lbs/hp - Nice for a decades old motorcycle. Low 11 second quarter mile.

    Chevy Corvette Z06 - 6.3lbs/hp -
    The 400+ hp Prius C/R- 6.7lbs/hp -

Kawasaki ZX14R - 3.64lbs/hp - 9 second quarter mile. Ever felt you eyeballs change shape from acceleration?
    Saleen S7 Twin Turbo - 3.9lbs/hp - Hand built, limited production. $600,000.

You see, if you can handle a Z06 'Vette, the C/R should be easily handled. A real grocery getter, the C/R.

Did they also make it rear wheel drive, or is this just a flashy museum piece with no ability to put power down in the corners (i.e. where it matters for most racing)?

The super-capacitor lasts for how many seconds of acceleration?

The supercapacitor just captures power that is normally lost because the battery can't absorb the great amount of charging current available during the short duration of regenerative braking.

    Further info:

Toyota has released new details about the Yaris Hybrid-R concept, ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Drawing inspiration from the TS030 Hybrid, the Yaris[IMG] Hybrid-R has a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 300 bhp (223 kW). The petrol engine powers the front wheels, while two 60 bhp (44 kW) electric motors power the rear wheels. This setup enables the concept to produce a combined maximum output of 420 bhp (313 kW).
In road mode, the electric motors produce a 40 bhp (29 kW) boost for up to ten seconds. When track mode is selected, the electric motors deliver their full 60 bhp (44 kW) boost for up to five seconds.
During braking, the electric motors act as generators and store energy in a super capacitor. As Toyota points out, a super capacitor is lighter and delivers a faster power charge / discharge than a traditional nickel–metal hydride (NiMh) battery.
The model is also equipped with a third electric motor that acts as a generator and is located between the engine and the six-speed sequential transmission. It helps recharge the super capacitor during deceleration and directly power the rear electric motors during acceleration.

Thanks for the info. I knew if was only few seconds or the battery would be too heavy for racing. I wonder if hybrid makes it a better track car compared with the old school bigger ICE and AWD.

Having raced a 500 hp car weighing 2800 lb and driven an F40 I can assure you that uprating an engine from 100 to 500 hp is not really hard unless you do a combination hybrid. But that doesn't make it useful. The strains on the chassis require considerable beefing to te point the chassis begins to look like a Corvette instead of a Yaris. Yes chassis having to resist 400 hp and 500 lb ft of torque do bend and when it does the suspension does funny things. If their chassis handles 400 hp 200 hp is a snap.
What I'm hoping is Toyota is using the car to test and evaluate a 200 hp Prius C that weighs 2900 pounds and ?I wouldn't be surprised that the chassis on the show car is based on the Mazda 2. Now a 200 hp hybrid Prius D whets my appetite. I guarantee customers will line up for blocks and hybrid suddenly becomes IT in the marketplace.
I recon it will still yield 40 mpg; perhaps Toyota is bent on showing Honda what the CRZ should have been.
    Here's my deposit.

It's just a concept vehicle that's pointed towards racing. It would make a good road racer, and I'm always looking for another ralley race. The hope would be some of the power/suspension management software would make it to the street, along with some of the hp and 4wd. A WRX antagonist?
