Each European Country has its own testing rules and legislation. I know here they would immediately tell if you removed emission equipment, well maybe in that the car wouldn't pass the emission tests. Here you do not require a safety/emission test until the car is 3 years old but then it's required every year (6 months for taxi's).

After market parts are not a problem here but obviously the car must pass the emission tests. Aftermarket HID headlight kits are illegal and will cause a car to fail.

    In your country, perhaps!
Certainly europeans (myself included) can't agree. Many recent (pre-2007) diesels still smoke, and particulates are much higher than Prius tailpipe.

Overview : Engines : Which model : Golf : New : Volkswagen UK
(VW TSI get Euro6, and TDI get Euro5)

Prius, by 2009, at its launch, had Euro5. Certainly European Standards would be worried if PM emissions had to be adressed in a ISI engine.

I disagree. The latest Euro 5 diesels don't smoke, but the Euro 4's do, Fords especially.

Diesels are still horrid unless strapped with expensive emission control systems. Have you noticed more engine fires in the local news of late? I have. If it isn't taxis with overheating dtf's, it's coaches.

It's always the engine bay and never attributed to the dpf or emissions system. It was rare for coaches to catch fire, but it seems to happen all too often at the moment and always on NEW coaches.

OK generally they don't and when regenerating they produce white smoke(ish). The ones with urea injection seem fine though.

Which is a far cry from a black smoker. The worst example I've come across was last month. A 1980's pick up with upright semi exhausts. Whenever it accelerated, huge clouds of grey smoke so thick you couldn't see the truck.

That is no longer possible with a modern diesel.

Never seen anything like that since the early 1990's. Any diesel like that would have failed its emission test years and years ago.

As a side effect of not being popular here(and other political reasons), they can be exempt from emission testing. At least in Pennsylvania and California. With the low volume in the fleet, it was deemed not cost effective to make testing facilities carry the equipment for a diesel.
