I had the dealer replace my 12-volt battery yesterday for $197 for the battery and one-half hour labor ($47.50) for a total of $244.50 plus tax.

Had the 12 volt replaced by AAA Battery Replacement (Bay area, Northern Calif) service in my drive for $125. No charge for labor. Three year guarantee.
    I was impressed.

How about posting photos of the new battery? I'd like to see what was installed.

i moded a civic battery... it seems much more reliable in cases where a light gets left on.... i think the whole setup cost me less too. i'll re check price. the only thing is, you lose that vent (hope it never blows)... and you need to modify the hatch floor/battery cover and connectors to work (add in connectors)... i totally rigged mine...

maybe i'll take a pic later...

In Denver on 5/12/12 Mtn States Toyota is running a special to replace 12v battery on Prius (mine's an '05) for $99.95. Comes with 84 mo warranty and 2 yr free replacement.
Seems like a deal to me.

Well, that is worse highway robbery than usual. The OEM battery is less than $200 and it takes 30 minutes at most to install. $300 out the door is the norm for the Prius battery replacement at Toyota dealers. But it doesn't take a certified Toyota technician to replace the 12V battery. And there are other options to the overpriced OEM battery and even some of the more recommended alternatives.

I just replaced it on my 2008. It was like $197 for the battery and they wanted about $50 for installation. I did it myself. I am not the greatest mechanic so it took me a little over an hour to do, but I did it. Just watched a couple you tube videos on how to do it.

When I did ours, I bought the battery from the dealer and installed it myself. I wrote up a post on the installation. You can find the link in my signature below. It doesn't take a lot of tools and can be done by anyone who has mechanical ability and uses common sense. The dealers want TOO much money for the installation.

There is no voodoo here. It's just a battery. IMO the Optima is overkill, but if thats the way you want to go, you can pick one up on amazon for about 170. If you want to get more creative you can switch over to standard terminals like these and grab an $80 special from pep boys. Move along. nothing to see here.

Can you post pictures of your "creativity" that you have done on your Prius?

LOL I asked you to post a picture of your "creativity". I was implying the use of the emergency terminals that you linked to in your post in an actual 12 volt battery installation on "your" Prius as well as a standard type battery which you had suggested. I did not ask for a youtube video on how to change the battery. I am very familiar with how to change the 12 volt battery in the Prius.

For the record, I would never recommend to anyone to use "emergency type" terminals such as these. Universal Top Post Battery Cable Terminal Red / Black : Amazon.com : Automotive

You would have to either fabricate some sort of adapter to fit the small clamps on the cables from the Prius and then connect that adapter to the terminals, or cut away the original small clamps which would cause more damage than good. But, if you want to mod your Prius that way, be my guest.

But thanks for the reply anyway. It definitely made me smile and laugh.

I think within this link there is discussion about using mobility batteries that are more than adequate for Prius use and are deep cycle that are below $100 and I think around $80, though it takes a little modification.

I got the optima for $144 shipped from ebay using a 10% discount code. Best deal on a direct fit no fuss 12v battery replacement. Took 20 mins to install with basic tools.
