My 2013 Prius came with the Entune (Non-JBL) Nav & backup camera, I replaced the head unit with an aftermarket that I'm VERY happy with. The very last thing for me to connect is the backup camera, I already have the video plugged in but noticed some posts about mismatched voltage for the power that I wanted to get clarification on before I did anything.. From everything that I could dig up, it sounds like the factory backup camera is looking for 6V in rather than the standard 12V, I'm guessing the Entune unit was putting out 6V for the cam. Since I only have a 12V accessory lead to give it power, I don't want to burn the camera out. I'm curious what have other people done to retain the factory backup camera when replacing the OEM HU with an aftermarket?

I already ordered it but considering it was only $3, I went to Radio Shack for some instant gratification and purchased the parts there. The reaction when I went there for the parts was kind of funny, back when I used to work at Radio Shack (early 90s) it was commonplace for people to come in for electronic parts to build circuits.. we had walls of all sorts of components.. I guess they don't get much of that anymore.. Now they barely have any of those things and the employees have no idea what they are or what they're used for.. They were in disbelief at what I was doing or that it could even be done.. All I got were blank stares when I asked where their transistors and heat shrink tubing was. lol

And that's why Radio Shack is nearly done...

Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, and the erstwhile Mechanix Illustrated used to have many many build it yourself plans.

Now, all they do is showcase and advertise "bling."

It's a sad day for any of us (yes, I worked at the Shack for a few years back in the late 80's) former Shack employees.
The kids working there now have zero idea (and even less desire to learn) about electronics other than how to load the latest app on their smartphone.
Recently I built a buck converter (basically a DC to DC step up converter) for a solar project and needed about a dozen components to build the circuit. I got the parts at the local Shack. I also got the blank (and the 'I could care less what these "things" are') stare at the register.

It's a shame what has happened at the Shack- I'm sure Mr. Tandy is rolling in his grave when he looks in on things at his former company...

PS- I (un-fondly) remember getting boxes and boxes of Force Feed (all the small component parts) off the delivery truck every quarter after doing inventory. We always hated putting out that stuff- and we hated doing inventory every three months too. It must be much easier and quicker now without all those small component parts. I wonder if the store employees even do store inventory any longer at the Shack?

I got the 7805 and it works great, though it does get extremely hot even on the heat sink so it makes me a little nervous keeping that stuffed back there amongst the spaghetti.. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it in place unless I can secure it in some kind of housing that insulates it from direct contact with the car and other wiring..

My backup camera isn't working yet though.. I'm not sure why, I have to double check the wiring and see why I didn't get a picture.. One day next week....

They stopped making them back in 2003 :(
.... which pretty much coincides with when they really started going down hill!

Here's a site with lots of their old catalogs..
Radio Shack Catalogs - General Catalogs

Remember those damn "free battery" cards?

Yep! The red batteries were gee freebies and the green were better grade general purpose. Wow no more catalogs!

I recently used a couple of these:
"LM2596 Buck DC-DC Adjustable Step Down Power Supply Module Converter"
    $7.29 (for two) on Amazon.
They will handle the load for you.

Not in my application- I'm drawing about 200 ma from it.
I think it would be fine for the camera too... it's rated at 3a.
They use the back of the pc board as a heat sink also.

I finally have the camera working, winds up the color coding I found on a few forums was NOT correct; as soon as I changed the wiring to match what I found on a different forum the camera started working and the voltage regulator stopped getting so hot. I'll edit my original post with the proper wiring.

One thing I noticed is the pic is awfully fuzzy, especially when it's dark. It wasn't like this on the OEM unit but it is on the aftermarket. I triple-checked the connections and even tried different wires including properly shielded video wire.

Keith, I am about to do this same install on my 2010 prius. A) Did you ever figure out the fuzziness and B) What were the correct wire colors you found? Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry to steer the thread a little away, I was reading your comments of the former RS store.
In 1982 I bought my first IBM compatible Tandy 1000, with a floppy disk drive, a CGA monitor and a dot matrix printer for the business I just started to do.
This Tandy 1000 was the first equipment introduced and sold in NY State at those days. The RS store was located i on Ditmars Blvd., Astoria.

The first Radio Shack I went to as a customer was the one up on Deer Park Ave- I'm sure you know where that was.
I later ended up working in the South Shore Mall location (IIRC that was fall 1987).
Maybe I sold you some RS stuff in the late 80's :D

The Deer Park (Sunset Plaza) store is near by my house and the one I shopped for the last 25 years.
