Do I have a Prius model II or III?

We just bought a 2010 certified Preowned Prius from a dealer. They advertised it as a Prius II model. I asked them which model it was when I got there and they also said II. The reason I believe it may be a III is because it has the JBL stereo with Satellite option and also has stereo and bluetooth controls on the steering wheel which I am quite happy with. When I questioned that I thought those features were only on the III, they still said it was a II. I wasn't going to press the issue since the price seemed very good for a III. Can this be a II with the stereo/bluetooth upgrade? Is that possible? Or is the only way to get these features is on a III?

    Thanks,
    Scott

Hi Scott, 2010 to current is Gen 3. Gen 3 has a 1.8 liter engine. Previous generations have a 1.5 liter engine. Did you receive a User Manual? You can check the engine size in the manual.

Having JBL means it is a III for 2010 and not a II, as is having the extra rear speakers in the top of the doors (8 speakers total), Bluetooth, cd changer and available XM radio.

Hi Walt, thanks for the info. Wasn't referring to the generation but the model. Or I guess some refer to it as trim level. i.e. II, III, IV and V.

    Found this on another thread.
Prius III (mode 1225): Prius II equipment, plus JBL® AM/FM/6-CD changer with Bluetooth® hands free capability, integrated XM Satellite radio, and eight speakers

If that is the case, I would have a III. Just wondering if there is a way it could be a II with an upgrade package. I guess it's semantics but just curious if it is a II or III. More as a curiosity thing.

It's not that some refer to it, but it IS a II, III, IV and V for 2010. After that, beginning 2011, models went by Two, Three, Four and Five. This was because of the Prius v (lowercase v, station wagon, larger Prius) coming out in 2012.

The other info was in my post above about the differences, I think I made it while you were looking up the info, lol.

As for upgrading the radio, see about the rear doors having the 2 speakers per door, top and bottom. I doubt a person or dealership would add the extra speakers changing out the door panels and all that. And a II could not be ordered with an upgraded stereo making it a II with upgrades so I say you have a III, as long as the extra rear speakers are present.

Thanks Paradox. I'll have to count speakers to be sure, But I know there are at least 6. 2 on the dash, 2 in the doors and 2 in the rear doors that I recall. Will have to look for the last 2.
Maybe that is why I couldn't find a comparable model at as good a price. I think they overlooked the stereo system.

No problem and congrats on getting a nice price and knowing more than the dealership about the car! haha

    HI Mark,
I was saying some refer to it as the "Trim Level". But you make a valid point about why they would change from II, III, etc given the release of the Prius v model. That could surely create confusion. Yea, I think I got a pretty good deal. Paid $17,495 for it with 34,000 miles. The body and interior are in excellent condition with very few scratches and interior spots. Has brand new tires and wipers and even a set of studded snows the prior owner had. Looks like it was garaged most of the time.

I had the 2010-II for three years. As best I knew, a II with upgrade to JBL/BT/SAT is the III.

It seems very unlikely that an after purchase upgrade would also get the steering wheel controls.

Another identifier of a III versus a II would be SKS (smart key system), IIRC the II does not have SKS and the III has 1-door SKS (driver's door). Is this correct?

No, my II also had the 1-door version.

The II didn't get Bluetooth either.

But, does it add the steering wheel controls the III has?

Right, the OP wanted to know if he had a II or III. Buttons=III, no buttons=II.
