Tell the dealer that's what you want. If they refuse, tell them you will contact your lawyer, since they are charging you without actually fixing the vehicle. Unless they told you straight out that they were not sure of the problem and needed to do those things first, and you approved that strategy, they will not likely prevail in court.
Your lawyer can advise you whether to pay the bill and request the old parts back with it, pursuing recovery after, or some states allow filing for a "writ of replevin" getting a court order to have them release the vehicle to you without payment. Then they chase you.

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, just a former repair shop owner.

Not following your thought process on this. The pads are the least of your problems unless I'm missing something here. Forget about the pads.

Should have had a $$ cap on this with those idiots.

This is a good lesson to anyone reading this. Don't let the dealer go on a search & destroy mission on your dime. Make them call you and you approve anything over $500. Get that in writing.

This is the horrible part of owning a Prius. A difficult problem and in inept dealer tech staff. We have seen this here so many times.

And if you found mice before they will be back with a vengeance unless you installed mice barriers in the various tiny access points in the car which have been discussed many times here on this forum. Probably more wire damage they haven't even discovered yet. Dash has to come out too for inspection.

Problem with a lawyer is they don't do anything for free. There will be a retainer involved. And through it all your car's still totaled.

If it was me I would have them take all the parts back out. Pay the labor. Drag the car home. Put it up on jackstands all the way around as high as you can. Get the service manual and start digging into the car. Its not rocket science its just alot of hard work doing the disassemble of the car to replace the harness.

I do remember reading a thread a while back with this exact issue and almost exact parts replacement till they
discovered the rodent damaged harness. Don't remember the outcome.

Since it looks like rodent damage, dealer suggested calling insurance. So if it is indeed rodent damage my comprehensive policy will cover it! They are also covering rental car just like it was a wreck.

So (after approving another $700 in labor) mouse damage was not found so I'm still screwed. I had to approve to extra labor for them to get it opened enough for insurance to see. Now I'm in $3200 with original problem still there. They still claim that all replaced parts were damaged by this wiring harness problem. They also say that once the parts are out of the package they can't be returned.

Any advice is appreciated. I could maybe squeeze out what I now owe them buy don't see how I can get another $3100 for the wiring harness that they are now "sure" is the problem. The second part they replaced they were 99% sure was the problem, the last they were 99,9% sure.....

    Help!

Tell them to put all your old parts back and get the car out of there. Do not pay them for the parts. Try to get them to let you take yer car out of there without paying anything. If you have an elex backgrd, you know that replacing parts and getting the same codes means the parts are not bad.

They have to me multiple times that they won't put old parts back in. The parts can't be returned after being opened. Apparent it doesn't matter that the parts didn't fix the car. Total cost is either right at vie of car or exceeds it.

I will see if I can get information code.

So they are 99.9% sure which means they don't know.

The original code was C1313, the others (C1345, C1368, C1377) all appeared after they installed the Skid Control ECU.
I asked for the information codes setting under the codes they gave me and they said there were not any.
Should there be information codes that go with the codes I listed?

I have trouble believing there is a significant wiring problem.

The wiring in these cars is very well done. I would still put my money on a connector.

Take a look at the file linked below. Its for a 2004 but it should be about the same.

    http://tinyurl.com/qxcgtpc

All they need to do is follow the 12 volts from the power supply connector to the relay. Its no different than a 57 Chevy in this respect.

As I checked every connector for proper voltage I would spray each connector with Deoxit and replug them a couple of times.

And again make sure you get your old parts back. At this point the dealer is going into CYA mode so I would get my vehicle out of there quickly.

I would adamantly tell them to take their new parts out and give me my old parts back. I would put the old parts back in in their parking lot and leave (towed or not). You can't let them take you for this ride any longer. Call Toyota Corporate, do something to stop the bleeding. This is ridiculous!!!

So here is my latest update. I've been talking to a lawyer (actually got 15 minutes of free advice with one from my church), and a place less than 2 hours from me that only works on Prius (autobeyours.com) and pushing the dealer to get more info on what they did/found. They say there is a single wire in the harness that is open. First the service advisor said shorted but when I actually got to talk to the tech and ask directly "shorted or open" he said open but not completely. He said it was showing around 1Mohm. I'm an electronics tech and that doesn't make much sense unless he was measuring the wrong place or had a screwed up meter. So mentioning the lawyer and getting time with the service manager I now have this offer from them (I told them I wanted to take the car for a second opinion and not pay them anything at the time I took it) they are saying for $5000 they will guarantee to fix it (it had been $6300 incuding the harness and no guarantee that was the end) or $2500 (down from the $3200 on the curent bill) to have them reassemble an then take for second opinion.

I'm thinkning of taking it to autobeyours, their rates are reasonable, strightforward and they have a stock of used parts if needed. What I'm trying to decide is if I pay them and then go to court or try fo fight more before I get the car.

By the way so far I have paid them $170 (for the ABS relay which was the first part). I have someone high up at the dealer I want to try calling and the lawyer wanted me to get back in touch if they wouldn't let me take the car for a second opinion without paying.

I really appreiate all the advice here, keep it coming. It makes me wish I had found this site and posted before I took the car anywhere. That is what I will do next time.

Along those lines, which service manual does everyone reccomend I buy?

You can access the Toyota factory repair manual at techinfo.toyota.com which is a subscription website.

The third party service manuals aren't good for much more than info about how to perform scheduled maintenance activities. If you feel the need to buy one of those, Bentley is the best.

Alldata online is not bad, much better than the non Toyota print manuals, and much better price than a Toyota subscription.

For this problem however, I would stick with the Toyota products.

I have dealt with Steve and he is the person I'd recommend to work on yer car. I wouldn't pay the dealer anymore than you have to. I'd be willing to bet Steve will have it working in less than a day. He's an honest man. Tell him Phil Weber sent ya. :)

It was a corroded/broken wire in the engine compartment wiring harness. They replaced the interior one first by mistake. In the end they gave me a price that was as good as I think they could do under the circumstances. It took huge work on my part to get them to do that. I'm happy to help any way I can. Maybe you can get by without having them replace everything before finding what is wrong.
