FOB Replacement and/or 2nd Key

    While I know this has been addressed in the forums, it seems that a lot of the other posts are outdated and I am hoping to get a comprehensive answer below.

    I bought a used 2006 Prius and it came with one FOB. I would like to get an additional FOB with keyless entry just in case we lose this one, or this one breaks, etc. I see FOBs advertised from anywhere between $30 to $300, and conflicting responses about whether Toyota dealers, or locksmiths, or end-users can program the FOB to work with the vehicle.

    1) What are my options?
    2) How much should we be spending
    3) Where should we get it?
    4) Who can program the FOB?

    Your help is appreciated!

    $175ish for the FOB hardware + $200ish for the dealer programming. $400 is crazy expensive, alas unavoidable.

    Mike,
    I have been workin this issue for a long time. Here's what you can do (this will work and is fairly cheap):
    1. Order a brand new, never used fob from an online Toyota dealer
    2. Follow the instructions in post 88 of this thread (IMPORTANT EXPERIENCE: KEY/FOB Programming Issues | Page 5 | PriusChat)
    3. Share your results with others. :)

    Bought a used remote and took it to the dealer. They advised used remotes fail to program 80% of the time. They tried programming it (I watched) and it failed to program. I wasn't charged of course.

    The dealer sold me a brand new smart remote for $204 and programed it for $62. A bit pricy but I like the comfort of having a working spare. Any dealer that is charging $200 just for programming is taking advantage of you.

    Thanks guys, your feedback is much appreciated. Where do I buy a new FOB exactly? One poster said an online dealer, but I don't really know what that means.

    A online dealer is a dealer that maintains a website on the internet who accepts orders online and offers either pickup via will call at their location and/or ships to a specified address. They usually accept credit cards when doing online business. Some dealers will allow you to place the order online, then come in and pick up the item at will call and pay then with cash or check.

    Here's one that I recommend.

    AutoNation Toyota Gulf Freeway Parts | Toyota Parts Online - Genuine OEM Toyota Parts and Accessories - Houston, Texas

    You should be able to buy a new key fob at any Toyota dealer parts dept. Go to one near you if you are not comfortable doing it online.

    Nice and succinct. DIYers will eventually figure it out...
    Great job in keeping the thread alive and updated. I just successfully recoded a $100 (silver emblem on black plastic) FOB i bought online at some generic supplier (not a dealer). This now serves as my primary as my old & ratty FOB will go in the closet. I ust bought my 2005 2 months ago; it came only with one key.
    1. YES- KEYLESS ENTRY. the remote key works (open/close/panic)
    2. YES- PLUG IN START. works well
    3. YES- SMART KEY. remote start is good to go.
    4. PENDING- CUT KEY. need to find some free time to locate a local locksmith.
    * I had been trying this about 10 without success. Needed some patience. BUT the key point is to go quickly and smartly through the steps. I failed going too slow and methodically, trying to ensure i exaggerate each move. Not good. Just sharply cruise through it.
