I tried twice and ended up with an error part-way through each time. I'd say Apple is overwhelmed

    Wow that must be something.

True story when I worked for Sun Microsystems the Sun AT&T team got the contract to set up the server farms to validate the new iPhone with Apple and AT&T. AT&T had the exclusive on the IPhone for a few years. Every Sun sales rep assigned to that account made over a million dollars every year for 3 years.

As usual, Ebay is flush with offers to buy the iPhone 5s from scalpers. I wish Apple would apply a restocking fee the first couple of weeks from product launch to hamper this activity.

Seems that way, although I do not know why proxies are not effective.

My wife let the Apple store manager hear it one day when she was trying to purchase a iPad 3 generation.

The apple store is less than a mile away in an affluent area.

Evidently every morning at 10:00 am my wife would go to the Apple store and wait in line sometimes hours and they would give a few out and say we are out if stock. If your interested come back tomorrow.

After 3 days of this my wife's patience is wearing thin. She is about 5'5 " maybe 120 lbs and works out every day. A vivacious Blond and ASU grad who grew up in North Shore Chicago.

On one day this elderly Asian couple on line in front if her has a note saying iPad 16gb Wifi Verizon. The sales guy says all I have is 2 left but 16Gb AT&T . My wife says I'll take one that is exactly what I need. The elderly Asian not being able to understand English makes a phone call and puts his son on speaker phone and in broken English a voice says my father will take both.

The sales manager looks at my wife and says sorry you will have to come back tomorrow and try again. My wife went balistic on the manager who is about 6' 5". She said I live in this area and I'm a constant patron of your store. I must have purchased 4 phones, 2 iPads, a few mac Pro laptops for my family. It is obvious these people don't live here ( she really didn't know that) and they are just buying this and reselling. They will never come back. Are you sure you want to alienate me a local home owner and shopper?

The manager said I can't do anything about it. She said I want to speak to your manager. He finally relented and said I'll hold one for you when it comes in what's your phone number and I'll call you tomorrow.

Amazing but true story. She got the iPad.

The flip side of the 'easy to be a scalper' story is that it probably makes sense to order the phone online for in-store pickup, sight unseen. If a visit to the store convinces you that a poor choice was made it is trivial to cancel the transaction and receive a full refund. And of course done that way, no chance of a trip to the store for naught.

People who have a phone they want to exchange have more complicated choices.

LinkedIn is a legitimate site, but it has a trap for unwary new users: An option comes up "See Who You Already Know on LinkedIn", and if you go ahead it asks for your email address and then your password, while assuring you that your information is safe with them and will not be stored.

It then spams everyone in your address book - although I just checked the help page for this feature, and they now claim they won't email anyone without your permission.

I read Reid Hoffman's book The Startup of You albeit awhile ago. He is a Stanford Grad. He was the COO of PayPal and co founder of LinkedIn. He us also the first round investor of Facebook with Peter Thiel.

The book talks about adopting to the future, invest in yourself, and transform your career. It's not what you know, it's who you know.

If you just read the first chapter you get the importance of networking to close deals or secure jobs and career advancement.

Getting your invite out to your address book is a networking process.

That makes sense, if everyone in your address book is a business contact - but LinkedIn used to just email everyone, relevant or not.

I've been a member myself for quite a while so I can't see exactly how they do it now for new users.

I was able to update around 1:30EST over our crappy wifi network at work. Took about 50 minutes total!

Anyway, loving the simple touches and additions.

That's not the behavior of a legitimate site. Just because they are a real social networking site that provides real services, does not make them legitimate. What you describe above is a definition of illegitimate. This means that when they say "So-and-so wants to add you...etc." they are lying and they are crooks.

    Thanks for the info.

And since I'm retired, I'm not looking for translation work. When I was working as a translator, I was in a legal aid office (free legal aid for low-income migrant farmworkers) and though I did volunteer work for friends, including one who ran a very small sister-communities organization with El Salvador, I was never actively looking for additional work.

Daniel your pro bono work for the poor is to be commended. Hopefully you can carry on with that wonderful legacy.

It is to bad you had a bad experience with LinkedIn. A few clicks of the mouse and you could have avoided that.

LinkedIn is the real deal. My profile goes back to 2006, the company was founded in 2002.

My only "experience" with LinkedIn is that I keep getting spam emails from them. I am not a member, I do not have an account, and I've never contacted them or had any dealings with them. I just keep getting their spam emails. I guess with "a few clicks" I could redirect their emails into my spam folder.
