I'm getting new tires for my 2007 Prius at Costco. They are pushing for an aftermarket (Dill) replacement package for my valve stems/cores. Their rationale is that the rubber grommet will soon give out on the OE stem/core. Cost is minimal ($8 and change for all 4 tires). Do I need to do this? And, if so, is it okay to install a part that's not native to my Prius?

All 2006+ US Prius have tire pressure sensors (TPMS) that include the valve stem. Replacing the TPMS valve stems with rubber units is illegal, let alone a bad idea. They should at least recommend a "rebuild kit" for the TPMS units, which is generally not necessary. Check the current valve stems - TPMS ones are metal, easily recognized as different from the black rubber units. Hope the installer knows more about TPMS than the service writer...

I've been sloppy with the terminology because I'm a little unclear about what it is. They want to install a Dill "sensor service pack." It does not replace the sensor. You can find service packs listed on the Dill website, but it doesn't explain what they do.

Replace them when they go bad, not before.

I'm on my 3rd set of tires, and the first set of TPMS gaskets. I figure I'll get a new set of gaskets with the replacement TPMS that I'll have to buy when the batteries go bad after 10 years or so.
