Hi PriusInParadise, I contacted Toyota about this matter, and they claim that "the part number for the HVAC controller has the same specifications for the United States and the other countries referenced [Korea and Mexico]. It was confirmed that all the HVAC systems for the 2012 model year Prius will automatically switch to the outside air mode depending on the ambient weather driving conditions."
Can you please clarify where you obtained the file stating that Air Inlet Mode customization is available in Korea and Mexico? thanks :)

Yes, I absolutely dislike this auto recirc thing too! The air here in Phx is off the charts terrible in addition to the ozone warnings, not to mention a TON of people with off the charts large trucks spewing fumes because they all have to speed and/or accelerate like they have race cars. Only times I catch the auto recirc is usually when I smell exhaust fumes and I look down and sure enough, its changed to outside air...Only way to prevent it is, when you use auto temp mode, just push the circ button and push it once again and it stays that way. Sry, but this being a method to reduce liability smells like bs. How could this be any attempt at offsetting liability when Toyotas, like all other makes, are recalled for safety issues, AND they take their sweet precious time to respond to serious allegations such as the unintended acceleration issue. They did wait until more people died...sad.

Turn off AUTO, switch to recirc, set temp at 70deg, then forget about it.

Pushing the circ button does not keep my 2012 Prius in recirc mode. In temperatures below ~40F (probably not frequently encountered in Phx), the 2012 Prius will automatically switch to outside air mode if the interior humidity exceeds a specific threshold.

    However, according to this post:
want to disable automatic switching between recirc and outside air mode | Page 2 | PriusChat
your 2010 Prius air inlet mode can be set to manual. Unfortunately, this is not available in the 2012 US Prius :(

tach18k, the automatic switching to outside air mode occurs even if I'm not in AUTO mode if the outside temperature is below ~40F.

I have received no assistance from Toyota on this matter, and now that the cold weather has arrived, driving my Prius has become unbearable due to the automatic switching to outside air mode (I've already suffered an asthma attack as a result of exhaust entering the cabin). I guess I have 2 options: sell my Prius or figure out how to fix this myself. Can anyone point me in the right direction about how to edit the Prius software? It would be helpful to see how the manual recirc override in the 2012 Prius in Mexico and Korea is programmed and/or how the 2010 US Prius override is programmed. I would greatly appreciate any assistance! thanks :)

I discussed this with another member in a different thread and he claims factory setting is for AC to operate in recirculate mode and he had the dealer customized it to manual. However, on my 2010 it'll alternate between fresh air and recirc when AC is turned on depending on outside temperature so I'm not sure what it means by "function to shift from INLET mode to RECIRCULATION mode when A/C is turned on" as default.

However, on my 2007 Lexus RX350, there's a dealer-customizable option to disable this automatic switching between recirc and outside air mode and I in fact had the dealer disable it. It's not listed as one of the Lexus Personalized Settings in the manual or on the website though. It reads as:

While the air conditioner is ON or in AUTO, the vehicle can be programmed for the following:
    1. To automatic switch between the recirculation mode and fresh air mode as necessary to meet the temperature requirements set. (Standard)
    2. When the climate mode is turned on, the user must manually select the desired mode, recirculation or fresh air mode.

I bet the Prius does have this option but it's not among the options mentioned in the manual as they never list all the available options. It might very well be the Air Inlet Mode option, which is set to Automatic from factory (but misdescribed as what it actually does).

See attached (thanks to the other thread).

I drive my 2011 Prius in Eco mode continuously , and the vent switches when it's colder outside than the temp I have it set for. Also, in Defrost, it's impossible to put it in recirculate. I'd like a fix for this too.
