Much safer to have been driving what ever Mr. Van Dyke was driving recently in L.A. (Smirking). Wonder how much of the minor sell off was short sales?

  4. I'm glad I read this, it just felt reassuring to know that, yeah, there was a fire, but that doesn't suddenly make Teslas unsafe. Part of me is curious to know just how they could trace the cause of the fire to that level of detail.

    I don't think actually have.
The driver reported hitting something metallic on the highway. Got off so he could park somewhere and take a look. The warnings came on, and he smelt something burning while doing that.
They know it was the battery, and not something in the frunk. So they are surmizing that whatever hit the car, pierced the battery. Latest I read, they hadn't found the metal piece that did the damage.

From FD reports, it appears the bottom of the pack (which has a ballistic plate protecting it) was not pierced. PURE speculation by non-Tesla people is the something came up under the frunk at such an angle that it pierced the front of the battery pack.

This would be a freakish occurrence, but after putting over 80 Million vehicle miles on the fleet of Model S cars...

Tributes to 'beautiful teen' who died in car crash - Get Surrey

Two die in 'horrific accident' | This is Cornwall

Two die as stolen car crashes | UK news | theguardian.com

Appeal to trace man who tried to free motorist from burning car - Liverpool Echo

A quick google found FOUR separate crashes here in the UK in the last couple months where the car burst into flames killing the occupant(s). Yet a car catches fire in America and nobody is hurt, yet this makes the headlines here? How? Why are the above links not reported in the US? Or is it that car fires are very common and EV fires are not.

Did Tesla even get to see the burnt car in person? How did they determine that it was an accident?

They have the car and no doubt will have talked with the firefighters.

Amazingly, I got to see a (gas) car fire first hand last night. My daughter came running into the house just having seen a car on fire in a neighbor's driveway. When we rushed to see if the fire department was on its way (being exactly 100 yards away), they were already there. On top of that, just a few hours before I saw my first Telsa Model S in a parking lot a couple of hours earlier. Then I read about the Telsa fire....which shows the safety engineering involved, not the car weakness.

wow - this is too great ... the EV haters thought they had some leverage on Tesla - and it turned out to be another feather in Tesla's cap - in addition to most of their stock value coming back. Who da thought
