Sorry to hear what you're going thru - not fun. On another note, don't worry about your C. Your mileage is a combination of your driving style and your very short trips. ICE doesn't have time to warm up fully.

What "should" it get and why? It's part of the questions that you should answer (see below). If your expectation is based upon EPA numbers, please read Car and Driver: The Truth About EPA City / Highway MPG Estimates | PriusChat about the EPA test.

And, he failed to answer the questions at . We can't help or tell you if it's "normal" w/o more info

Thanks for your polite post. Going through and incredibly difficult time and being insulted is not what I need.

Truth hurts. Sugar coating is useless when we're talking numbers. Good luck with your problem, but the problem is your lack of knowledge not the vehicle. Keep up the good work and you may alienate yourself from all the Prius gurus on the site.

I don't think he is/was trying to be mean on purpose. But you do have to realize his point.. Folks come on here for no reason other than to cause problems and create false statements about the Prius and its counterparts, knowing it's a public forum. It did appear like this espeically when everyone who tried to help by getting more details from you were left with no response.
On that note, I'm extremely sorry to hear about your current circumstances. Perhaps it would help to improve your mileage if you purchased a Scan Gauge, and/or tracked your fuel ups on Fuelly or another site similar in nature. Keeping tire pressures up is also pretty important. Maybe invest in a block heater, that way your engine block is already pre-warmed when you need to go somewhere, this will help to reduce fuel consumption.

Maybe even consider window tint to keep the car cooler and reduce the need to run the A/C.

    Good luck with everything.

Tony listen to the gurus here. All of them are trying to help you. Do not misinterpret terse advice as a curt response. Over reacting in anger, is a classic newbie mistake made by far too many new internet users. Wait a day before you respond (even if we are giving you some tough love).

Another thing you may want to be sure of: The hybrid battery vent on the driver's side back seat needs to be free and clear. If you've got something blocking it your car will be upset with you. This has had reported effects of poor mileage and abnormal engine behavior. Just a thought.

Dealer will cost $$ to check and probably find nothing. Do all the free stuff first.

One day I had to waid for my son to get done with practice. I sat with the AC on for about an hour. that really messed up my mpg. I think it dropped to about 40 mpg but I am not sure how many miles I had on that tank. I gained it back so it would have been early in the trip meter.

what I am trying to say is if you have to sit in the car with AC on it ruins you mpg. This could be the reason. If this isnt the best time to give any attention to learning how to get the most of your prius. then just drive it is my advice. If it drives you crazy. go rent one for a week and drive it instead of yours and see if you get the same performance. this will tell you if it is the car. or the way and type of use your car gets.(y) I am not sure if there may be a car that would work better for you. I think the turbo diesel cars may be better for sitting at idel with AC running. but they dont get great mpg city. they are better on hwy. and diesel is more expensive to buy at the pump.

anyway figure out if it is something with your car. and go from there.

It should be under waranty unless he has to many miles on it. I think no cost to check it over for poor performance.

Yep. I don't jump in to help anymore until mileage complainers give us sufficient information. Answers to the above are a good starting point. This is even more true for me now that I'm working again w/a job that often keeps me quite busy.

I've often found it was a waste of my time and many others to spend the time asking questions, speculating, going back and forth etc. often to have the complainer not answer our questions and sometimes never return to answer. This happened countless times. A LOT of collective time ends up being wasted. That is exactly why I wrote the questionnaire.

We can't help people who can't help themselves. If they won't take the time to answer, why should we take the time to help?

I wonder if he has something blocking the battery vent fan in the back seat?

It's unlikely. The probably answer has already been given, even if it was not appreciated. Short trips, A/C use, combined with the fact that MPG is not linear all combines to make people think it's a big deal. He's not getting 50mpg, he's getting 40mpg! Well, as stated, that's the same 20% loss you'd see in a 20mpg vehicle getting 16mpg city. Most people would never complain about the latter because 'the numbers are similar,' even though that 4mpg loss costs you more than twice as much at the pump as the 10mpg loss in the Prius.

Short trips are hell on any gasoline or diesel vehicle. That's why I went with the Plug-in as I do at least half of my driving less than 2 miles at a time. My '25mpg' Volvo got 18. If my Prius is out of battery, it gets 35mpg under the same circumstances. That 6mpg loss was a heck of a lot more expensive for me in fuel costs though.
