Dlr Ext.Maint. & Warr. Plans or NOT? Help

There's a lot of discussion on this topic and I think it boils down to what you think is the probability of something catastrophic happening. I tend to prefer to self-insure. But you need to do what helps you sleep at night.

I'm similar to you in that I like to perform my own maintenance. What drew me to the Prius is the low maintenance to begin with (not much that needs to be replaced or done to my knowledge in the first 75K). It is supposed to be a fairly reliable car, but there are expensive things that could go bad. Lot's of people think the Prius is some magical car, but it seems pretty simple and I would think (no experience) non-Toyota shops can handle it.

You're dealer is caught with one lie. Here's how you change the oil and clear the maintenance light yourself:

 

Another lie. You can purchase the extended warranty at any time up to the expiration of the standard warranty, so you have three years/36,000 miles to decide if you want it.

I just purchased a 2014 PiP Advanced this past weekend. I skipped the extended warranty, but decided to purchase the maintenance up through 75,000 miles after he dropped the price to $1485.

My plan was to then go and research the cost for those tune-ups I would pay between the 25,000 miles already included and the 75,000 miles in the plan. Is there a thread detailing the cost for a tune-up at the dealer vs. independent mechanics or can anyone include that here?

 

Hmmm. Cost of maintenance from 25k to 75k with you turning your own wrenches.
Oil change at 30k, 40k, 50k, 60k, and 70k @ $40 each = $200
Tire rotate every 5k would be 10 rotations @ $0 each = $0

$200 you do it vs. $1750 they do it, no way! Even with a good indy doing it you'd still probably save $1,000!

Extended Warranties:
I just purchased a preowned Toyota Prius V from Toyota Dealer and the original owned the vehicle was goverment owned.
They drove it 106,000 miles before they traded the 2014 Prius V for another prius.
Seems that all the maintenance records were performed at the same Toyota Dealership and nothing major is shown in that report.
This is the big question: Should I cancel the $ 1795.00 Extended warranty ( 3 yrs / 36,000 miles warrant from the after marked company named Millenium . They have the "Gold" pkg , but I really don't know what they will cover if i have a problem . The finance guy unfortunately told me the warranty I purchased covered the Hybrid Battery and I now know
their is no Hybrid Battery Warranty on preowned .
After being upset at the finance guy , he recommended the Mid-west Toyota Warranty that would cover more things that could go wrong. Midwest Toyota doens't cover the Hybrid Battery , but he said Midwest is the in house warranty and not aftermarket warranty . Bottomline, that warranty is $ 800 .00 more + $ 1795.00 = $ 2595.00.

Should I back away from all warranties and just go w/o a warranty. I too, purchased this Prius feeling comfortable from what other owners said about its reliability.

Any advice or experience with these situations will be greatly appreciated. I need to cancel the warranty today , if possible.

I've never gone for those, just assume they exist to line someone's pocket, and isn't yours.

 

I agree with @Mendel Leisk . Companies offer the "extended warranties" (used to be called service or support contracts) because generally, the amount they charge is more than they pay out for claims.
That means you usually would be better off putting that money aside in the bank, earning interest. It would then be available for any repairs, with interest.

Any mechanic, or you yourself, can do routine maintenance* on a Prius. In fac,t you can enter maintenance done by others on Toyota's owner website. so you have a record.

Blow off the extended warranty.

*Brake work is somewhat Prius specific, but you may not need brake work for 250,000 miles.

 

We might have locked horns on this before? Anyway:

Toyota USA recommended maintenance includes an in-depth brake inspection, tri-yearly or 30K miles, whichever comes first. That is regardless of remaining pad thickness, and entails pretty much the same complexity as pad change, just that they are reused.

That said, it's still readily DIY'able, with a few Prius caveats, easily accommodated.

Toyota Canada also recommends brake fluid replacement, same interval.

I'm drifting off-topic though.

 

What he said ain't true. Extended warranty doesn't cover schedule interval maintaince, nor discounts them unless you get it in writing in hand.

And you can always purchase extended warranty from any company that offers such service/coverage AFTER the purchase. If you know basic of cars and it checks out fine, these prius are reliable with little maintaince. If you do all the scheduled tune up on time and maintaince, drive normally and not abuse it, chances of a catestrophic repair bill won't happen. Ultimately if you already know you will resell the car, I'd take it to dealership to get oil change and stuff so it goes on carfax to keep resale value up.
