I own a 2008 Prius and I have been taking it to the dealer for service because it seems like non-Toyota shops don't know how to economically service the Prius. They constantly recommend new engine and/or cabin filters and charge a lot for them. But now I'm seeing that the dealer I go to also seems to want to change the filters and rotate the tires at every service and this really increases the cost well above a normal oil change price.

How often have people really been changing the engine filter; cabin filter; and rotating tires? How often is this really necessary? How do I find an honest shop that knows the Prius and won't insist on this service more than necessary? Are there any non-Toyota shops that I can trust to service the Prius well and economically? I'm at 108000 miles now so I'm well past warranties (including extended).

Changing the cabin and engine air filters is something you can do yourself. Not even any tools required if you can open a suit case you can do this. You could change both inside 10 minutes including unlocking and locking the car. You can buy the filters on line at a fraction of the cost of the dealer.
There is no set change interval it depends on the conditions you drive in. You can take them out knock the dust off them or even vacuum them and put them back if they are not to dirty.
If you change the oil to synthetic "if you are not already using this" means you can extend the oil change interval to 10,000 miles. This is the same interval as Toyota recommend with synthetic oil throughout Europe. Do your tyre rotations at the same time.
This should save you a reasonable amount without risking damage to your car. It is important to check the oil level at least every second fuel fill when you are at 100,000 + miles and even before then. This is something many drivers neglect thinking it was alright last time I checked it. Do not neglect this as you risk damage that can easily be avoided.

The Toyota service schedule suggests replacing the two filters at 30K mile intervals. I suggest you accept the responsibility to perform this work yourself, as it is quite easy and as previously pointed out, you can buy the correct Toyota branded filters for relatively small prices online (such as $13 plus shipping for the engine air filter.)

You can inspect the engine air filter by holding it up to the sun. If you see light coming through then the filter element is still OK. Compare to a new filter if you have any doubt.

Regarding the cabin air filter, some have successfully washed and reused the plastic element. You'll have to decide what you like breathing through.

Regarding tire rotation, you should not pay for that service. Usually when you buy tires from a tire store, periodic tire rotation is provided at no charge.

If you actually have to pay for tire rotation, I would suggest doing the first rotation at 5K miles, then subsequent rotations at 10K mile intervals. This saves half of the rotations suggested by the Toyota service schedule.

If you don't have tire rotation done, the front tires will wear out faster than the rear tires. So you get to buy two tires at a time. This is not the end of the world.
