Man; I did not mean to start a controversy !!

My reason for trying this,. is because that I pull a 1900 lb. RV with my Prius. This past summer, the ICE ran hot with outside temp. in the 100' s. Please read, " Prius pulling a RV? What do you pull !! "
My goal is to cool down ICE temp., so I'm trying this modification." FACT , it does make engine run cooler by 30 to 40 degrees." My first test run failed because I could not reach stage 5, because ICE was to COLD. The next day I grill blocked all of the lower vents and the sides of hood; outside temp was between 65 to 75 degrees; my ICE temp. was 180 to 196 degrees. I would say that 1/2 of that trip I had a tall wind. The 56 MPG - tall wind = minus 2 or 3 points. " FACT, it does help the overall performance of ICE ", you do HAVE more get-up and go. It really surprised me!!

My major problem right now, is to find a clear hard plastic bottle that will fit between the fuse box and the left headlight. I'm using a too thin plastic bottle right now; at high RPM's, it will suck in and my glue will have some leaks in it. Once I find the right bottle, if I find it ( did not know how hard this is to find ); I will do more testing.

If anybody got idea's on the bottle, please post it...... 5 3/4 " depth....3" wide .....7" long, with air tight cap.

F Y I.... Read, " Ron Novak's DIY Water Injection System, " from 1980's; and, " Evaporated Water- Alcohol Infusion for your car, " from 2007 by John Melendez.

I think if you are using methanol and water vapor then It may work, My concern would be that if you change the exaust you may trick your car into adding fuel which will waste gas and increase unburnt fuel out the exaust. If you have a scan gauge you may be able to watch the O2 sensors and see if your mod affects them. I think many used washer fluid. some of it has the correct mix of methanol and water.

you may be able to use your winshield washer as your tank for your mod. and this might solve your tank issue? just a thought:rolleyes: good luck and please post results after you work out the issues of fine tuning the sys. the washer tank also has a light to let you know when the tank is low.

The HELL with everyone gave us CRAP, I am just like you, always looking something new to do with our car, maybe is work or maybe not, who care, it is our time and our money, the most important is our WISDOM:), maybe only 5% or less of all research out there is work, but without those research I do believe we still live in the CAVE:). So my next question to you Sir, which vacuum line did you tap it in? or post some pic please my friend, I love to see it.

OK for towing 1900-lbs RV, at least we see your motive more clearly.
Give us an idea for how much water/alc fluid you use per mile.

I think it is well known that steam is compressible because it is in gas form. any small water dropplets that go into the combustion chamber turn into steam because of the extreme heat, this conversion from water to steam soaks up lots of energy and the steam expands to help the power stroke of the engine. water injection wont hurt your engine as long as you dont suddenly add too much. like filling the cylinder half way with water then you would have a problem. water vapor aka mist. should be no problem as long as it is set up in a way that water wont build up then suddenly enter the engine. using the vaccume of the engine to draw water in should be safe because it only pulls water with engine running. if the engine shuts off so does the water. all this being said. I wont be doing it to my new car. I did it on a 95 neon, it didn't work because the O2 sensors thought the fuel ratio was wrong and started adding more fuel. It ran fine, actually a little better but I was looking for mpg, the neon already had plenty of power. I just used a vaccume line and some inexpensive drip sprinkler parts. using a 1/2 gal per hr mist head and the tubing and a larger water btl.

I think someone who likes to watch all the engine computer feed back and has the ability to adjust them durring the use of water or water/meth inj could gain some. The OP said he is towing with his and his engine was running to hot this mod on old engines has proven to do that. all the way back to wwII.

To answer some questions on my experiment; and it is still ongoing:

The first thing that I want to make clear is, I'm not putting pure water into the cylinders!! It is a vapor of water and alcohol.

    (2) I took off the back-fire baffle ( about 2 1/2" to 3 " above butterfly) on the air intake and drilled a hole for a 3/8 ID " hose; cleaned and then put it all back together. I'm using the incoming air to make my vacuum, the higher RPM, the more air coming in, hence, more vacuum.

    (3) I did not tap into a vacuum line, for fear of missing up the computer, but it might be OK!! I just wanted something simple.

    (4) I'm using 60% water, 20% rubbing alcohol, and 20% methanol. From what I have read, a 50%+ 50% is better.
I have a 1 qt. tank, filled 3/4 full; I have added about 2 oz. to it, because of a leak ( thin plastic bottle problems ).
I have read that the " VAPORATOR " states that 1 gallon of mixture can make 1760 gallons of water vapor?????

    (5) No pictures yet; I'm still working out some problems, IE, thin plastic tank; bigger tank as stated in my last post; rerouting my hoses ( NOTE - the tank must be lower than the vapor line going to the intake hole ).

    (6) My wife also has a 2011 Prius; until she hit a dog, causing about $ 2,000.00 damage. I asked her how my Prius drives; she stated that it drove smoother and a little faster. My wife just gets in and drives!! Big foot......
I'll probably catch it now!! :giggle: !!

    F Y I..... Another read; " Water Injection by Robert Mann " :) .

I know where you can put your reservoir, but it won't be easy to fill or see the level of fluid in it.

These images are from my highbeam DRL mod thread (link in signature below). There is quite a bit of space behind the driver's side foglight and in front of the front wheel wheel liner.

In this image, you are viewing the bottom of the DRL control box I have mounted in this area.

Here is a pic of how big the case is for my DRL module:

I'm guessing you could get maybe a quart or two sized container down there. You just need to figure a way to fill and determine the volume of liquid in your reservoir, once it's mounted because it'll be out of sight down there.

Xliderider; Thanks for the info.....I have a place between the driver's side headlight and the fuse box. Bent the metal a little bit. This is what I'm using now. But I have also read that long distance can affect the vacuum. I'm also looking in front of the AC coil; distance of hose would be cut down by 2/3's ; the frame for radiator has holes built in it at the top, the AC coil has opening at the top; I still might have to drill a hole. I need to go and look at my wife's car since they got it tore apart. This looks very promising!! :)

So, this was the very best technology in the 1940's for supercharged airplane engines at very high altitudes on low octane leaded fuel. (Ethanol adds a higher octane)

It is revived briefly in the early 1960s for turbocharged automobile engines on leaded fuels.

The Prius is neither turbo nor supercharged and runs just fine on the lowest grades of unleaded gas. I fail to see how adding more ethanol to gas that is already 10% ethanol is going to help in any way. What did I miss?

I'll keep water out of my fuel, and water out of my oil. Thanks all the same.

xray is exactly correct. You will gain nothing from this because of that. I'm glad to see all this excitement but this is not a new concept.
"it drives smoother and a little faster" and "it burns hotter"???. Is there going to be any metrics on this experiment? How will you know if it "truly" provides a benefit?

I'm going to make a bold prediction; if metrics are used and apples to apples data is compared, there will be no noticeable gain in performance or mpg (and its likely to decrease performance due to what xray said). I'm not saying this to stifle anyone but, this has been around a while (almost as long as snake oil).

;) Snake Oil has been around since about 1917.
Snake oil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Look.
I fix phones for a living, and I'm nobody's idea of an engineer or a mechanic, but I'm thinking that this injection system is going to cost something....be it efficiency, power, emissions or longevity.
    Yeah.
It's been around for a while, but leaving aside the mechanical (to say nothing of the aesthetic :) ) differences between a Prius and a Supermarine Spitfire.....how many hours did they put on a Merlin engine before it had to be torn down for maintenance? How does injecting a water/alcohol/methanol brew affect a closed loop fuel injection system for a G3?
    It's kinda like.......oh?
    I don't know.
    Towing a one ton trailer.
It may not be 'bad' for the G3 but it's just something I'd like to know about before I buy one used, if you know what I mean.

Reason # 3,456 for why I eschew buying previously (ab)used cars.

I wish the OP luck...well, unless they decide to sell their car without disclosing the physics and chemistry experimentation.....but that's a karma thing, and not my lookout. :)

Ummmmm, just to let you know, facts require more than one observation.

As evidenced by????? It "feels" more powerful is not any type of metric to establish a fact. Facts are not established by feelings either. Put it on a dyno with and without the mod and report the results or better yet, have an independent party test it and report the results.

Consumer Reports tested a product called "Platinum Gas Saver" which sounds simular to what the OP is trying. They said it had no effect on fuel economy.
"The Platinum Gas Saver ($248 for two, free shipping) includes tubing and a plastic reservoir containing liquid. The National Fuelsaver Corporation claims the device is guaranteed to increase fuel mileage by 22 percent, in addition to extending engine life by cleaning out abrasive carbon deposits. It connects to a vacuum line leading to the intake manifold. The manufacturer says that the product adds microscopic amounts of platinum to the air and fuel going to the engine, helping your car burn gas more efficiently and cleanly.
In our previous tests, there were no changes in fuel economy after we installed the device in two test vehicles, a Nissan Altima and a Ford Excursion. We followed the manufacturer's instructions for installation and ran our standard acceleration and fuel economy tests with and without the device. The manufacturer says that the device may take from 200 to 1,800 miles before it is fully effective and that for greater success, you may have to advance your engine timing 10 to 12 degrees and/or install new oxygen sensors. But those actions alone could improve fuel economy if they were not set correctly or working properly.
After 500 miles of testing in each vehicle, we saw no improvements. We also replaced the oxygen sensors in both vehicles, even though the vehicles were new and the oxygen sensors did not need replacement. Both vehicles use computer-controlled electronic ignition timing designed to meet emission standards and deliver optimum fuel economy and performance, preventing us from advancing the engine timing. In more than 1,800 miles of driving, our tests showed no overall mileage improvements. In addition to the cost of the Platinum Gas Saver, consumers would have to pay for the oxygen sensors in each vehicle—about $140 for our vehicles—plus a labor charge for the work.
The bottom line: The best way to get the best mileage from a tank of gas is to follow the vehicle manufacturer's service schedule and fine-tune your driving habits. To learn more about saving fuel, see our guide to fuel economy."

To back up some of the claims, it should be relatively easy to stick the Prius on a dynamometer and get some actual numbers.

It won't be easy or feasible to measure all the other bad, but for something that is "noticeable" to humans, the dyno will definitely notice.
