You are welcome! I plan to use this trick myself as I need to get a new interior door for the house. It's just big enough that it will stick out of the back about 6 inches. I will use a short bungee cord to secure the hatch so it doesn't bounce wildly.
Good luck on your invention. For me, since I rarely would do this, I hope to remember to just press the button and have the latch return to its normal position before closing the hatch.

Pat Lobb Toyota in McKinney, Texas changed my backup beeper to one beep for free almost 3 weeks after I bought the car. The constant beep was insane and was driving my entire family nuts.

Personally, I like the backup beeper. I'm getting to an age where I can use all the extra cues I can get to let me know what I'm doing. I get distracted easily or day dream I guess. So I even use the destination cues sometimes on the way home or to other preset destinations.

    You have my sympathy.

However, so far as I'm concerned, if I ever wind up in that condition, please remind me to shoot myself. :D

Penske of Downey did it for me for free as well. They just had to call corporate to make sure there was no safety issue as they had never done it before.

Pleased to say my local dealer fixed my beeper for free. took about 40 minutes from showing up to leaving. no question about the "safety" thing, but they did have to check up on the procedure.

My Toyota dealer has changed the backup beeper to the one-beep mode for FREE.
That takes more time to connect the car to the computer than to carry out the change.

FANTASTIC!!! Works like a charm. I also had to drive home from Lowe's the other day with shower doors for the home bathroom update. The hatch-open beeper nearly drove me crazy!!! I tried this fix and it works great, with just a few simple clicks of the latch with a screwdriver you can drive without the constant beeping. You do have to make sure to reset the latch with the open hatch button when your done or you might damage the latch if you forget and try slamming it shut. Putting something over the latch is a great idea. I just took a simple wood shim and put a piece of double stick tape on the back to hold it in place and protect against damaging the latch from forgetting a reset, easily removed and stored in little storage areas in the trunk. Can't thank you enough for this tip "phoenixgreg" this makes the car mo-better for home improvement projects :)

How's the one beep working out? I was told by my dealership that they can change the beep for me but it's one continuous beep. Bee--------------------------eeeeeeeep!!! That's going in the wrong direction in my opinion. Curious if you have different results.

Either your dealer is clueless, or they lied to you.

Let them change it for you and then complain when it doesn't do what they said it would!

My dealer never argued and didn't charge. They actually agreed it's annoying, especially as it isn't audible outside.

Have your dealer change it to one beep! Then it is nice and quite.

I find the beep annoying and distracting. A friend that I visit often has a long driveway. Since her very expensive cars are in the turn around, I back up the driveway, beeping all the way. The other day she told me that she'd rather I made a u-turn in her perfectly manicured yard than listen to that as we backed out.

Had the car in for its monthly oil change and the techs tell me they don’t know how to change it to one beep. They said they have been asked by others but don't know how. Does anyone have instructions or know where to find them

Change dealer, if they can't change to one beep, then they are not smart enough to change oil either!
