    It's a cartoon.

Flashbacks, Dream Sequences, Ghost from the afterlife?

On many long running and successful series, the death of a character and sometimes even regrettably the literal death of an actor, lead to new characters that can create new angles and add new vibrancy to a series.

I'm thinking of Coach/Woody Harrelson on Cheers. And the many eventually transitional characters in the series MASH.

I'm a very "luke warm" impulse/occasional watcher of Family Guy, certainly not a hard core fan. But killing off, or transitioning main characters is a device that can work.

Cheers re-invented itself over the course of many years replacing Coach with Woody due to the death of the actor who played coach, and also replacing Shelley Longs character with Kirstie Alley. As well as going through cycles with the up's and downs of different bar patrons popularity, including Kelsey Grammar and Bebe Neuwirth.

MASH was masterful at transitioning beloved characters and bringing in new characters, over the many years of it's run almost too many to mention.

I don't know if a cartoon dog character on Family Guy even rates a blip on this radar. But I think a lot of series die, because of a reluctance to embrace change.

It's really not killing off, or losing a main character in a story telling scenario that is the problem or question. It's what you do with the void created by a characters absence that matters. It remains to be seen if the writers for Family Guy use this as a spring board to new creativity, or if this is just a publicity death pang of a series on life support.

ok you guys need to be more considerate of people who dont have cable and just finished season 4 when Rita was found in the bathtub. now am wondering (crying and screaming actually) why netflix lists 8 seasons of
Dexter but only 4 are available with no DVD options??

as far as Brian "just being a dog" holy crap that has got to be the misleading statement of the year. he was just about the WHOLE show (not to mention his voice is the creator of the show is it not?)

You might as well just stop watching. John Lithgow was the shows peak.

i started watching because EVERYONE told me it was a cant miss show. nearly everyone also said that the show got better in the latter seasons. I thought season one started a bit slowly but I have enjoyed every season (up to 4) very much.

I will say that in shows like this where it seems like the plot lines have to get more and more "interesting" they do tend to burn out from lack of options.
But since most series like House and what not did not burn out until season 7 or later, I feel like it should be good for at least a few more years

Keep watching Dave. Some fans said season 8 was disappointing, but I disagree.

I was disappointed in the later seasons. It's ok though, boardwalk empire and homeland are my new tv addictions.

A beloved Family Guy character killed off? Has this ever happened before in a TV series? OMG! There can be no way back from this, can there? Once they're gone, that's it. How in the world could they ever fix this? Remember, most all of Family Guy story lines are ripped off from famous TV shows.

    Possible solutions:
Pam wakes up - deaths were all a Dream

All Newhart episodes were just a dream
