I practiced changing a tire as a precaution. I also stowed a couple of wheel chocks. Also people remember to check the air on your spare (if you have one) :)

I heard GM did a study and found that the majority of cars in the junk yard had spares that had never been installed. If the spare has been used chances are good the vehicle owner called AAA to install it for them.

Doing your own tire rotations, or seasonal tire swaps (for those who have a winter set mounted on separate rims), will provide plenty of practice.

The reason car manufactures are omitting spares is for space and cost. Add to this that most folks either do not know how to change a tire or do not want to for various reasons. This is my opinion after living 55 years in various parts of the US and being a Mechanic for more than half that.

As to the OP's request, high density foam with your choice of adhesive is a cost effective choice. Rhino liner if cost is not an issue.

For the majority of the U.S. population, that would be true.

But some of us grew up off-pavement, in a mountainous region where the cellular boundaries are expanding very slowly, and regularly visit many similar areas throughout the region. Driving there without an actual spare tire is as sensible as hiking without the Ten Essentials. Just because most outdoor visitors survive without the later, doesn't make it sensible.

Thanks but Discount Tire does free rotation and balance.

The rims on my daughters car were so corroded that the tire repair shop she uses told her they had to sand and grind the bead seating area around the inside of the rim. They told her that using products such as fix a flat causes it.

At the time they were only addressing the one flat she was having repaired but I'm sure she has used it in all four rims so it's just a matter of time.

Hmm.. my previous car is ten years old and during that time I experienced only one flat. More lucky... or .. better roads in my area ;)

Shes poor and buys used tires that have to be replaced or repaired more frequently. I recently got her to see the false economy of such decisions and loaned her enough money for a new set of tires on a different car. Never the less, thought that if the stuff causes such problems, it was worth mentioning in this thread.

This happens without fix-a-flat also. That said, I have never been a fan of fix a flat as a repair option. I have been told it makes a big mess of the rim and tire.

    ------

In regards to the original noise question, I can't imagine that the spare tire is doing much to increase or limit the amount of noise transfer into the car. If you are concerned about noise, this is probably the best approach: Welcome to Sound Deadener Showdown | Sound Deadener Showdown

The spare doesn't deaden the sound it is all the plastic carpeted covers that go over the spare well that deaden the noise.
I would use fix a flat without thinking twice if it got me home without a tow truck. The tpms sensors are getting cheaper every year. My tech stream should have no problem programming a new one if needed.
The leaf has a really nice tire inflator with a sealant injection function. The sealant is in a bottle that screws into the compressor. [IMG]

that's what the pip has. take a look at the video over there, it's an odeal of major proportions to use it, nevermind ruining the tyre and tpms. i would rather put on a spare or have aaa put on the spare than use the slime, or wait for a tow, ride with the tow driver, (what if you have 3 or 4 people:eek: ) to the dealer, hope the dealer is open, wait for the repair when you don't even have an appointment and have to pay several hundred dollars.

I think we will all have to deal with slime and 12v pumps for better or for worse. I would guess the spare will disappear on the majority of passenger cars in the near future.

Or - the runflat tires will become more commonly used.

i wonder if runflat tech will get to lrr quality? for now, many of us who didn't get a spare, stow one in the hatch.

Ugh. For those of us able and willing to change an occasional tire, I'm not so sure the upside of run-flats outweigh the downsides.

The run flats do rob mpgs. Maybe a LRR run flat?
On second thought I guess the run flats will always be heavier than standard tires which will in turn reduce mpgs.
