Leasing a Prius Plug In

Hey everyone, new to the forums and this is my first post. I don't own a Prius but I'm seriously in the market for one. I found this thread through searching out info on leasing the Plug-In Prius. LakeMichBoatGuy, that $5500 lease cash was a June deal only? The Toyota website has offers listed on leasing Prii at low rates through August 5th, but it's not specific about if those offers include the Plug-In. Also, you said your Plug-In was base. Does the stereo still come with the Entune features in the base model?

 

Base PiP has Entune. It has heated seats and remote AC. The wheels are premium alloys without plastic covers.

 

I was just looking at the build your own section for the Plug In, I don't think that the Entune on the base model includes connecting with the specialized Plug-In App function for smartphones, does it?

 

No smart phone control. That's with the Advanced model.

 

Isn't the appearance of "poor resale value" mostly a case of the disappearance of the initial buyer incentives and tax breaks?

i.e. $30K out the door less $8k incentives/tax breaks becomes $22k net to initial purchaser; so if a year later it sells for $20k, is that <10% depreciation or 33%?

 

The Advanced model is definitely beyond my range to lease or buy at this time. I was in an accident last week that left my car totaled, and I'm about to have $3800 to play with for getting a new vehicle. I'm seriously considering a nearby used 2002 Prius with 255K miles on it with an asking price of $3,991 (that I'll try to talk them down to $3800 out the door) that I may pay cash or partially finance to keep some additional cash from the deal. I haven't checked it out in person yet. If that car isn't going to pan out I'm also going to look at a 2010 model with 100K on it and an asking price of $14K.

My final option would be to consider leasing a new one and buying it later when I've finished school (I'm a senior engineering student). I can really only afford $200-230 a month max while in school thanks to an internship, but even with those listed lease offers right now and my down payment I'm thinking the plug-in model will be too high even in base config. Anybody have any thoughts on the '02 model with high mileage? I may start a new thread to ask this.

 

you might want to check out the lease of a 2013 plugin base for 24 months at $209/month, with zero down...only tax, title and fees are additional...I saw this listed on the Lawrence toyota in NJ web site...they also have a $2599 down for $95/month...don't know if this works for you..residual is something like $20,xxx.

 

Hi Cptn: Particularly since you are finishing school, and on your way "up," my advice would be to get a reliable vehicle like a new Prius, versus the 255k mile car. If your budget is tight, and you invest the whole $3800 in an older used car, what happens if something major goes wrong? Yes, Prius is a reliable car when properly maintained...but that is a lot of miles on which to gamble with a tight budget. Brunnersnj mentioned that there are plenty of low-monthly-cost leases out there. The more lease cash involved, and the more cash the customer puts down, the more the 24 month lease is favored from a pure lowest payment standpoint. Aside from my financing issues, while it is an option to lease a Plug-In model in my state (AL), I found out they don't stock them here locally. With it needing to be ordered and the local staff unfamiliar with the plug-in, I don't know exactly what deals I could get on the lease such as the one brunnersnj mentioned.

While the $3800 was an amount I had in the short run to work with based on the insurance settlement (and I needed to get into something quickly b/c the rental wasn't indefinite), I do expect a few cash infusions/savings over the next few months related to school grants, taxes and the like, as well as the startup of another paid internship term this fall (in addition to pick-up work I do waiting tables) so I'm already building up from the $400 I pocketed for additional expenses. Appreciate all the advice I've got so far and will continue to ask for more!

 

May I ask how you were able to get yours for $417 a month? I'm interested in a PiP, and am doing my preliminary research on financing one. With the extension of the HOV Stickers to 2019 in California they're looking really good right now.

 

PiP was sold to me for $31,232 - $3,500 rebate(2012 model clearance). With $2,500 tax credit, my bottom line was $25,232. That's the Basic model with premium Blizzard Pearl paint.

I just rechecked my TFS app. My monthly payment is actually $519.79 for 60 months. $31,187 financed amount includes the all weather mats, sales tax, dealer doc fee, license and registration, etc. I got back the federal tax credit separately after I filed 2012 tax.

That makes more sense, thanks. So it seems as though leasing a 2013 right now is the best option due to the $5000 lease cash. I know that leasing through Toyota disqualifies the federal tax credit of $2500. Does leasing also disqualify the $1500 California tax rebate? Or do we still get to keep that if we lease? And is the California tax assistance a rebate or a credit? Does it only help bring the tax repayment down to zero like the federal tax credit or does it qualify for a refund?
