. I also noticed that Security at Galleria was not trained in any of the various aspects of EVs and charging. I gave them a short course on recognizing a vehicle that is charging/ not charging.

I don' think the OP needs to give any credit to the Leafer for not taking the EVSE after OP left. Because all drivers (BEVs, PHEVs, non-EVs), suppose NOT to unplug someone who is charging unless he/she gets permission. It doesn't matter if his/her car has EVSE lock or not.

Is anyone experiencing stuff like this in places other than California?

Seems to be a little different in Iowa...
There are 4 free spots that I stop at in Des Moines when I travel through there (about twice a month). I have never seen any other plug-in there yet. I have even had a few other people come up to me and say they visit there a couple times a week and have never seen anyone plugged in either.

I don't believe that all people make this supposition! The three I was involved with did not, the Tesla was unplugged when I got there, the gentleman with the lady had both 220V lines in his hand. I asked him if he had unplugged the Tesla, he said NO, I believe he lied. That's when I informed him that he must relinquish one of the two so I can try charging my car. As it turned out, unbeknownst to us both. That charging station was not working at all, but the other charger was working.I then hooked up my own cable and proceeded charging. At first the owner of that leaf indicated that she needed and wanted 220. It was only after I proceeded charging, that all three decided I should relinquish my connection and allow them to charge as I had a engine. At that point, suddenly 110 was good enough! I was totally flabbergasted as to the audacity of these anal orifices! They were unfamiliar with the term ICE, IN FACT they were ignorant about almost everything connected with EVs. Don't make suppositions, everybody is not as cool as we are.

I have never seen a free or paid charging station in all the years of driving in north Jersey!
Maybe they are there but I've never seen one.

If I come upon a charger where others that need it more than I, I will give it to the people in need.
When I drove my Volt, this meant I would give it to anyone driving any pure EV.
Now, in a long range EV I will give it to anyone that needs the range as I rarely do (never have so far).

Others may act like jerks, that is no reason for me to.

That said, free chargers are a problem as they can lead to exactly this kind of thing. No one should be camping a charger if they don't need the charge.

. It's because of the # of EVs in CA. It will happen in Iowa also, however many parts of the country are a bit more congenial, especially rural areas.

. The point is: that you may petition your legislators to get with the program! If you accomplish nothing else, your legislator, Govt, Fed and State, Mayoral offices, utility company will have heard you and may initiate something. Then again....it may be easier to move.

Even a generous soul can be turned off with vinegar (self rightiousness). Why folks don't try asking for a favor of a fellow EVer?? (attract more bees with honey). People can create the opportunity for generosity in others by asking for a favor as well as the opportunity to irritate them by being pissy. Their choice of opportunity and outcome.

Kind of, but in a different way.....
I use the same free Charge Point station every work day- I'm fortunate that it's a quick 2 min walk from my job. I know my charge is complete by 10:15 am every morning- so I go move my car at approx 10:20 every morning. When I go out to lunch in the afternoon- I usually eyeball the Charge Point spot just to see what's going on there- since I have been using that spot (for 14 months now) there has never been anything but an ICE vehicle parked in that spot after I move my car out at 10:20 am.
It's just lazy ICE driver attitude, arrogance, ignorance and maybe envy that they hate to see someone getting something for free that they cant get with their 11mpg SUV.

I would to see NY get aggressive and put some policies in place where ppl could get ticketed for ICEing a charging spot- but we have nothing like that yet- so there's nothing to sop ICE drivers from blocking charge spots any time they please.

Move like to the left coast, where I have to fight to get charging stations, here in Jersey there is way to much other stuff for government to spend its money than charging stations for a select few, who have total EV vehicles.

The logistics of your workplace, availability to charge, lack of competition and your implied courtesy suggest you have a good thing going. Touche! If I was in your situation I'd do it too.

However you drive a PIP (PHEV) which, like driving ICE, means you "do not need" the charger. Where is the justification for you to use the spot and not your local Vet? Also, does your employer pay for the electricity and police it's use, or does the Government at some level?

Don't quite understand the above question....?

The spot I use is a free public Charge Point Station- I applied, got a Charge Point card and use the station 5x/week. As to who pays for the electricity? I don't really know....

Good luck with that in this day and time where people feel the most important thing is them. Me first, second and third.

That reminds this "old timer" of the "gasoline crisis" in 1973, with long lines at gasoline stations (assuming it was your day to get gasoline, based on your license plate number), sold-out stations, fights over who would get the last tankful at a station.

Actually, I heard from the Security guards that they, the employees, were asked to remove their cars when the shopping center opened , at 1000. Which they have been very good at.
