I heard beeping as I came close to a car while driving today. I've never heard it for a whole year. Just wonderingn if this is crash detection and how I turned it on?

I have an advanced tech. 2010.

Like your plug in with the advanced tech. package, it uses the radar system that is shared with your cruise control to sense a pre-collision situation.

    It is always turned on.

It was more likely the VSC, or vehicle stability control. Did you hit some gravel, lose traction, or brake and hit a pothole?

    :)No, it's the PCS.

    Pre-crash Safety System
    (Millimeter wave radar type)

Predicts a frontal collision before it happens and helps reduce damages

This technology decreases damage by predicting and bracing for collision before an impact.
When the Pre-crash Safety System detects an obstruction (such as a leading vehicle) and determines a high possibility of collision, it notifies the driver with a warning buzzer. Then the pre-crash brake assist is activated and increases the braking force when the driver hits the brake.
If it determines the collision is unavoidable, the pre-crash brake activates to decrease the impact speed. At the same time, the pre-crash seatbelt retracts to restrain the driver to help reduce injury.

    Good call. :)

I'm on mobile, and can't see the OP's vehicle particulars. :p

Funny that it hasn't gone off in a year but it went off twice today.

:)I had a incident about three weeks ago. A car ahead of me stopped suddenly in slow traffic. I recall a "BRAKE" message in the MFD, while my Prius was auto braking. Pre-crash system and the radar cruise control are two great features on the Prius Plug In Advance and the Prius 5 with ATP.

You can also turn it off, so it isn't "always on". There is a button under the steering wheel to do so. It's close to the tyre pressure setting button.
    RTFM.

Somehow it must've gotten turned on since I'm sure I've come close to cars previously and I haven't seen this happen.

If it's off there is a yellow "PCS" in the upper right of the dash display. Way over by the center of the car.

You have to approach them fairly fast for it to trigger. Faster than most of us would drive intentionally. Unless you're crazy. ;)

No, it lights up only when it's off. PCS doesn't activate that often, unless you get into close calls all the time. Even so, it may be as minor as retracting the belt.

You mean it retracts the seatbelt too? Whoa. You learn something new everyday.

Suggest you read the manual. Yes, it's full of Engrish but that's entertaining to read too.
