He pays taxes to the school, the school does NOT belong to the school, it is a public place owned by the taxpayers of the district, which he is one. He had no intention of stealing massive amounts of anything that was in the school, just using a small amount of utilities that HE PAYS FOR in his taxes. If a parent of a student parks his car in the parking lot, is he stealing maintenance cost of repairing the parking lot? What if a parent taxpayer drinks water out of the school water fountain, or goes to the bathroom, are they stealing school utilities and should be arrested?

The school is not a public place, it is only to be used by the registered students of that school.
Parents are not allowed to enter the school ground without registering.
Just recently, a parent is arrested for not waiting in his car for picking up his child. He walked into the school.

Try that "it's owned by taxpayers, of which I am one" theory by barging past a Marine guard armed with an assault weapon at a high-security defense department installation. Or at the White House.

    I disagree.
In this day and age? With incidences of conflict set off by the smallest action? You never know how somebody might react.
You go out and "touch" somebody elses property? Then you put yourself at risk for whatever reaction the owner might have, and especially if he thought it was his right to recharge, you're just setting yourself up for a conflict that might escalate.
Whomever called the police handled the situation correctly.

It's a separate debate as to how the police reacted.

It doesn't matter if his "intentions" were to steal a small amount or a massive amount....taking without permission is stealing.

We pay taxes. Yes a percentage of those taxes support public schools. But those schools exist to act primarily as learning institutions...not free charging stations.

A public parking spot...is expected to be used as a public parking spot, a public water fountain is expected to be used as a public water fountain, a public restroom as a public restroom. Public Schools with outside power outlets are NOT expected to be used as Free Public Charging Stations.

This public school just happened to evidently have an outside accessible power outlet. I do not think the expectations for those outlets are that they be used by the general public as personal recharging stations, regardless of the minimal cost or drain.

It's a new dynamic, in that there are a lot of electric outlets within reach, but never before has it been practical for a passerby to suck any serious value out of them. But now, yeah, electric cars might start juicing up at any unsecured outlet. So we're going to need some new protocol; I'm not sure what.

I had my starterbattery die on me in my RV. I managed to get it running and drove to a garage. I ordered a 250$ battery from them which would arrive in a few hours. Until then I had to keep the kids happy and needed some electricity to run the video-monitor.
Obviously I asked the garage for permission to use their outlet.

Maybe it's a cultural difference, maybe it's because our electricity is >30ct/kWh, but I simply cannot imagine plugging in WITHOUT asking. Hell, I even asked my father-in-law for permission when I had a PIP for a loaner!!!

^^ What a load of BS. I can only hope the police dept. is sued for illegal entry into the car.
And I say that despite the owner apparently being a jerk and falsely accusing the cop of damaging his car.

You have to wonder. Around here, the cops are running your tag as soon as they get within visual range. Did this cop not have that ability to find out who owned the car? The whole story has changed so many times, you don't know what to believe.

As I said earlier, the cop was responding to a complaint of a car illegally plugged into an electricity outlet. He knew damned well the car was not abandoned.

Even a cop would realize the car belonged to the guy playing tennis a few feet away. He could have walked over and said "I'm sorry, but you will have to disconnect the car."

This story is why I do not support police expansion. Their priorities are so much different than my own. Not enough manpower to decrease violent crime, but oh so quick to investigate this sort of trivia or to pad the department coffers.
