If you have headlights on, I can see you on my 8 mile straight aways and I can judge how far away you are. With out headlights, we will just have to hope I am able to get back over when passing farm equipment. (mind you it would help if folks would not buy 'road colored' cars)

Definitely. Our wintergray metallic Prius was the only color available to us.

Prior to activating DRLs on it, people would definitely turn out in front of us, as we approached, almost as if we were invisible. The dark gray color isn't a high visibility color like white, silver, and red.

Now, with DRLs on, people definitely wait for us to pass before turning out across our path.

Bemused? I assume you are young and have excellent vision. I'm not and certainly don't.

I didn't add DRL and side turn signals to my wife's Prius v for fun. It was all about survival.

And it is why every vehicle I have owned since 1979 has had the headlights set to always be on when the car was running.

(Now if my Toyota mechanic would not turn them back off at every Service)

Be that as it may, the U.S. and Canada are on their way to be the last industrialized countries where headlight based DRL is even allowed -- now prohibited on new cars in the EU.

Driving with headlights on during the day reduces the effectiveness of brake lights of many but certainly not all vehicles -- less difference in rear light cluster brightness when the brakes are applied although that is somewhat mitigated by high mounted/center brake lights. And oddly it has been found in the EU that headlight DRL are less noticeable that DRL in separate light modules.

Well the EU are the enlightened ones, so it must be.
