    That's great.
However I would say that at least in Spring, Summer and Late into Fall, so far with my Prius I can do a LOT better than 44 mpg. My Summer Mileage exceeds 50 mpg.

Only in the coldest part of Winter so far, has my MPG dipped into the lower 40's range, and that's with a lot of short, Non-HSD friendly trips.

It's their specific testing that lowers mpg figures.

CC has a weird way to compute mpgs, not very appealing to the new and uneducated driver

CR says the Prius is the most economical to own at 47 cents/mile.
CR says the Nissan Armada is the least economical to own at $1.24/mile.

Gee, what a surprise- the hulking SUV came in last place...
And every time the gas prices spike- they have those "pain at the pump" spots on the local news showing idiots pumping $100+ into their thirsty SUV's. Just once I'd like them to interview me with my "I only go to the gas station twice a month now because of my Plug-in Prius"....

7 of the 10 on the CR list are on our list for a possible new car for my wife. (We're excluding the Civic hybrid, as she may just take my Prius, and the (IMO) trouble-prone VWs.) The most likely candidates are the Fit and Civic. The other car we're considering is a used Element.

    44 mpg?
I have to wonder how heavily they flog the car, during cold temps, in four inches of snow, through a construction site to get mileage that low.

I read this and forwarded to my wife as well. We both own a Prius. My lease is coming up soon, considering buying it out. The only issue is my kids in the backseat don't have a ton of legspace after I'm sitting in the drivers seat.

But, the fact is, nothing compares to these cars. The economics are just insane. Even in the dead of Minnesota winter i am still averaging around 41 mpg with my heat blasting on HI. it has been performing incredibly well in the snow as well. the traction control is amazing.

I am going to get a small degree of satisfaction when all of the naysayers, that told me I was making a big mistake in buying this car, read this article.

I've had mine since Halloween, and can't stop gushing at how happy I am with this car. We've had a true Ohio winter so far this year and I'm gushing at how good it's doing in the snow. Only since Thanksgiving, when it got really cold and has stayed that way, have I dropped into the mid-40s for mileage. I had been getting 50 on a regular basis with my 30 minute, hilly commute to work. I'm still gushing at mid-40s! First time Toyota and first time Prius owners. Incredibly happy with the purchase. People just need to open their minds :)

Prius wins first place in value for a new car. Best value among new cars? It's the Toyota Prius - Dec. 18, 2013

When I was comparing vehicle options I ran a lot of numbers through spreadsheets and found that even cars that seemed less expensive than a Prius seldom were if you examined the total cost of ownership and expanded the time horizon or anticipated increases in fuel prices. Even the few cars that were cheaper than a Prius were very close, saving at most a couple thousand dollars in a five year timescale. Even that savings would require a lot of sacrifice in terms of cargo space and passenger space. Nothing cheaper than a Prius comes close to having its interior room, which I find very useful when vacations hit as my closest family is hundreds of miles away.

In my opinion when deciding on a commuter vehicle on terms of practicality it is not a question of whether to get a Prius or something else, it's a question of which prius to get, and when to trade up to a newer one. Is it more cost effective to trade in after 200k, 300k, or 400k miles?

I would think the answer to that question would be that it depends on how quickly you accrue those 200-400k miles.

:)That's great news. Now, here at PriusChat, or elsewhere, we no longer have to refer to ourselves as being biased.
