my mpg has also gone down. and my engine is doing the same thing. I think that it is the temp. I installed water pipe insulation for the upper and lower grill, this seems to help some. I also am thinking about installing a pannel under the engine, like the regular prius has to help keep the heat in.:sneaky:

  4. I think we need a 2013-2014 winter fuel economy thread. I'm too lazy to make one... 18 degrees this morning and I only got 23 mpg. The engine had to kick on even though I had just entered the parking lot where I work, otherwise I might have gotten 30 mpg for the trip (n)

Well, I'm down to 44 MPG on a 30 mile commute down to Belfast. Ugh. Been about 20 degrees and I just put XIce III's on the little car....time for some pipe insulation?

we'll see what this winter brings last year was very little snow.

Yes, if the rear tires had more tread, thus heavier, the extra weight tires on the drive wheels can increase power required, hence less mpg. when rotated up front. Thats also true if theyty didn't keep tires on the same side by cross switching them not recommended for radials.
Another thought is if they changed oil and filter they might have used comventional oil (perhaps 0-30W) instead of the synthetic 0-20W. The heavier viscosity oil takes a good bit more power to lube the engine.
Also check your intake air filter or just replace it if it has more than 20k miles on it.
Tires are fine mean they have 40 psig ?
Weather gotten colder over the last few commutes. Batteries don't like being too cool or too warm.
    good luck.

  9. Yup! That was about a year and a half ago.

If you've only lost 5 mpg on average?

I'd simply attribute the loss to "Winter" which includes the drop in temperature and all that represents but also winter blend fuels.

    50-45 isn't too bad.

On my standard Prius, with admittedly too many short trips, my mileage has dropped about 10 mpg.

I don't think anything is wrong that warmer temps, and longer drives wouldn't fix.

Yeah - winter's hit us hard here in Hawaii too. We're about the same latitude as Okinawa. Lately it's down to 68 in the mornings - time to break out the winter clothes...and check the de-icer.:D Why - on most days - daytime temp is barely 85+.

Gotta watch my MPGs during the cold weather.

Edited to add: It actually got down to @42 degrees on Haleakala last night. Friends in Upper Upcountry Maui must have gotten frost on their windows (this actually happens up there).

Woo personal worst today! 19mpg on my commute from work in -7c temps and downtown Toronto traffic. Car wouldn't even give me heat until half way home!

  17. How are you enjoying the ice? I heard like half a million in Ontario lost power.

    We got hit hard too...

Speaking of getting hit, someone crashed into my car a few weeks ago and totally destroyed it.

So, I just got a second car, all the same specs. Meet Skylis 2:

Are you okay? Skylis 2 - see you're still sticking with our favorite color.
Merry Christmas. By the way we got some snow on, IIRC, the Big Island.

  19. Yeah I just kept the same color. Winters here are like 6 months. How long are your winters?

Winter? We're in the deepest, coldest part of winter here...mid 60s at night and around 85 during the day.

Blankets and a 45lb dog in our bed at night to keep off the winter chill. Wife unit says dog is is finally useful - I think normal temperature for dogs is like around 100.

There is some snow on the Big Island up on the summits of the big volcanoes - but it may have melted by now.
