I just closed the deal with an out of state dealer for a new 2014 Prius plug-in advanced. I dont live in a state that can sell them yet, and my local dealer tried to divert one from the port for me, but apparently Toyota wont allow that. My dealer has been trying since November 11th, finally had a dealer ready to do a delivery swap at the port, they were trading a 4 runner. Both vehicles were in A status, but when they tried to complete the swap my dealer found out Toyota wont allow a direct ship swap at the port so I was going to have to pay around $500 for the car to be transported from the other dealer to my state.

Why is Toyota screwing us like this, all the while giving incentives to the states that are currently authorized.

With the incentives I was able to take advantage and the dealer giving me a discount I saved $2326 going out of state.

congrats and welcome to the club! (y) no idea why toyota won't open the whole country, it would certainly help sales, but thier strategy is top secret.

The initial 15 state offering represented 60% of the previous Prius sales.

I'm guessing that Toyota didn't feel the remaining states warranted the expenditure of resources at this time for the Plugin Prius (Service training, marketing etc.) based on the expected lower sales in these states.

My dealer in Wisconsin went to service training for the plug-in about January 2012, and I have had no problems with service. I'm sure most things are the same as regular Prius so would think training would not be a big thing. Other things I can't say!

My dealer said they would service it, said they have a tech trained to service the plug-in also. I hated to go out of state but my dealer here said go for it.

Toyota is selling the PIP to earn zero-emission credits from states that require a certain proportion of EV sales. They don't actually want to build these cars, but it's in their interest to build *just enough* of them to get the necessary credits. What happened last year was they under-advertised the car, got a backlog, then got caught by surprise when the lease "sale" cranked up PHEV sales. So, in short, they want to sell PIPs only in states that require some EV sales, not in those that don't.

Probably not now, but Toyota, like most car companies, doesn't like EVs. They would rather build ICE vehicles, and have fought tooth and nail against change. It's sort of ironic that the PIP is as good as it is, given the company's top management's distaste for plug in vehicles.

i'm sure toyota has a strategy, and probably a dynamic one. and they have said something to the effect that 'ev's are not the future and fuel cell's are.' but there may be a lot of ev development until then. or it may change altogether based on emerging technologies. i hope for cutting edge ev development until then.

Wasn't that statement made before Tesla started doing really well with the Model S?

I just really hope Tesla can make a car with decent range that costs sub $40k. That would REALLY force the hand of the other companies.

Did you actually read the whole article? It states that there is no way GM does that and even hard for Tesla by then. What GM said was pure marketing, plain and simple.

gm has options, they won't do it unless the government pays for the research. tesla also gets government grants, but has no other options unless what's his name has an ace up his sleeve.:)
