Actual EV Range and Temp Relations

    Well back from coffee about 11:45 am. 4 degrees and 2.7 miles all EV no ICE. most of EV 2.2 miles is 45 mph zone.

    Awesome! Wonder what battery temps were like before you took off. I'm dying to get my new OBD adapter to check and watch different temps.

    Yeah! I do not know the battery temp. I was surprised the ICE did not start after 3 hours outside at 4 degrees.

    Since I have also posted some analysis of my old gen 2 Prius on PriusChat, I appreciate your effort all the more.
    The PiP stands high on my list of possible replacement cars, and when the time comes, your data will help me make the optimum decision.

    Your commute sounds very similar to ours. Would you mind chacterizing it a little more precisely? For example, what percent in the city, what percent on rural roads, and the typical speed on the rural roads.

    You seem to have a consistent methodology, as your "bend of high probability" or range of high probability is remarkably narrow for real world data. Even considering that you are throwing out your known inconsistencies, the unknown inconsistencies appear to be relatively small.

    My regular round trip for which I have recorded the data consist of (one way) 4 km of city streets (50 km/h speed limit, 4 traffic lights and one stop sign), followed by 5 km of rural road (60 km/h speed limit and 2 traffic lights) and about 3 km of city streets again (5 traffic lights with timing).

    The purpose of this little project was to try and establish relations between actual EV range of my driving style and temperature, so I tried to eliminate as much as possible all other factors influencing range.
    So, in this respect, the bend does not reflect 'real world data' I expect that with other trips with other terrain, changing traffic etc. I will probably have some 'data points' out of this bend.
    On the other hand, I expect that if this test is done in a lab (on a dyno, simulating my route and driving style) the bend will be even narrower.

    Well! Coffee today same times, 8:00 am going, -8 below and 11:45am return -2 below all EV no ICE. Heated garage 45 degees.

    No not really, slight up hill for .3 miles then a slight down hill for .3 then a drop to the river about a 125 feet thru a traffic light and back up other side to coffee. The first .3 miles is 35 mph then 45 mph then the last .3 is 25 mph. Total of 4 traffic lights, try to time them. :)

    not bad, i think that drop might start my ice, but it's hard to tell over the internet. :cool:

    Yeah! Going up hill I have to watch the power really close. In the winter, in cold it is really easy to go into power zone! At 45-50 mph it is real close to the power zone!

    I have a feeling that all these people saying that the ICE is coming on are accidentally hitting the power zone, even if for a split second.

    I Agree it is really touchie and can jump into and out of the power zone in a split second. esp. when really cold and going up a hill and on comes your ICE.

    well my problem is, i hit a downhill stretch after a half mile and am going into it around 30 mph. trying to coast and not regen, i hit almost forty at the bottom and inevitably the ice fires in colder weather. i can neutral it down the hill to avoid ice, but i feel like i'm cheating.:cool:

    Thats a problem.
    I'm lucky I eat up about a mile of EV before my big down slope so I have room for regen.

    yes, it's no problem. if i go the other direction for awhile and then turn around, i'm fine. but try doing that with your wife in the car.:cool:

    it also doesn't happen if the car has already been out that day and recharged. even if it's early and then late in the day. and it never happens over 30-35 degrees.

    Trying to coast with no regen will trigger it (due to speed) at low temps no matter what strategy you take?

    I think this will be the last time I will post on this.
    Today Going to coffee 8:00 am it was -22 below All EV no ICE.
    Returned home 11:45 am -16 below, ICE started right off the bat got 27 mpg.
    I thinks it is quite apparent that the sensor reads the temp. on the battery and not from the front of the car.
    I won't bug you guy's with more useless numbers. :)

    if i can keep my speed around 25mph it won't come on, but it's a 40 mph road and people behind me don't appreciate it.:cool:
