Look like you either really don't care or just plain hate them, i have been driving truck for the past 20 years +o- 3.5 million miles so far no back pain related to my job.

When i bought my prius i really did pay attention to the seats and seating position and for me it is a perfect match i am 5.10 165lbs and they fit like a glove can't wait for my first really long road trip with my prius.

I don't think a lot of people drove a Prius for a while before buying one. I drove rental Prii for over 20k miles before I decided to order one. Seats fit my nice person perfect [IMG]

I have Recaro's in my other summer car. Fits my nice person like a freakin glove :)

Lot of self-righteousness going on here. Geeez. Big fat difference between a 20 or 30 minute test drive and being stuck in the real world of commuter traffic day after day. Prius seat is basically an average one-size fits all seat: They have to make the cushion fit the thighs of a 4'10" tall person while the thighs of a 6'4" person are going to hang far over the edge of the seat cushion. This goes against Recaro's recommendation of proper adjustment which is 2 to 3 fingers widths between seat cushion and back of knee, not 6 finger widths like on my seat ....

And if anyone has doubts about Recaro's knowledge of seats, you're friggen out of your head. Car companies look to them for seat design ideas.

A proper seat for a tall person with long legs would be found in a BMW 5 series with Sports Package /seats (has extendable seat cushions, see post below)

Just got back from a 3385 mile trip to Florida... visiting family for most of December. Drove our Prius for 23.5 hours to Orlando in complete comfort. Only stopped at low fuel for food or snack... stretch... quick walk about and the rest each 500 miles or so. Ended up in Ft Lauderdale and then Tampa at the end of the month before heading back home. Broke the return trip into 2 days of approximately 750 miles each. Had no issues

I don't have a good back. I hurt it in a bad parachute landing when I was in the USAF in the 1970s. Demo jump for dignitaries in marginal variable wind conditions. Winds speed came up about the time I landed. Got slammed to the ground with enough force to break the webbing in my helmet. As I gathered up my equipment, I felt electric like shocks running up my spine. My back eventually went out on me for the first time about 10 years after the hard landing, and has occasionally gone out, usually a couple of times a year.

Have had absolutely no problem with the Prius seats... although I admit I didn't like our 2005 Prius ergonomics very much. Have enjoyed our Gen III and continues to be a frugal and comfortable long distance travel car. I still like the current interior, except I do wish it had more soft touch materials covering the cabin. The light plastics were done to save weight I'm sure... and this is a Prius after all, skewed heavily toward efficiency, so keeping weight down is essential. Instrument displays are the only real qualm I have with this car. They should be in front of the driver. The nearly central display position doesn't make much sense to me.

Unfortunate that the Prius seat doesn't seem to fit everyone, but I don't think you'll find a car that is so adjustable that it would adapt to fit every single person on the planet. I also still like the console/bridge... very neat and puts every function easily at hand. It's probably a matter of individual taste, but the cockpit does wrap nicely around the driver. The Dongle is a genius bit, smooth and easy to use, placed just in the right position on the console.

I have to agree with the comment about Honda seats. They were always well designed and bolstered perfectly. Comfort and fit were exceptional for me. I haven't sat in the last couple of generations, but would guess they are still great seats. Has anyone with seat fitment problems ever contacted Corbeau or even Recaro to see if they have a fitment for Prius. Expensive, but you do get a well designed sport car seat that most people could adapt. My mother in law uses a small pillow to tune up the bottom of a BMW seat. Simple and inexpensive fitment solution that works well for her.

The steering points slightly to the left of the centerline of the seat, but this isn't enough to cause your back problems. No way. Trouble with putting $2k of Recaro in your new Prius is, well, a lot of things, including the fact your back may still hurt after it is put in.

You have back issues. I've sat in a LOT of cars and honestly, the Prius seat itself stacks up fairly well to comparable cars like Corolla, Civic, Elantra and others like it. But the Prius overall seating pretty much stinks compared to a BMW 535i with Sport seat package.

Do everything you can to make your arms as relaxed and comfortable while driving, even if it means fashioning a 4" high block of foam for the door armrest (I did).

Front edge of BMW seats (w/ Sports package) goes forward for tall people and retracts for shorter people...

Only other I know of with extendable seat cushion is 2013 Avalon Limited, but the front seat edges curl up or down.

I'm 6'2 and have long legs and arms. I fit the Prius like it was built specifically for me. I don't really find anything wrong with the seating position but it would be nice of the front part of the seat cushion below the thighs can move up or down (perhaps the other prius packages have this option since mine is base model)

However, if I got the sunroof package, I would have probably lost an inch or two of headroom and my head would either be touching the roof, or sticking out like fred flintstone :)

I've owned a 1989 Honda civic hatch, a 2005 mazda3, a 1999 Subaru impreza and a 2010 Honda fit. I'd say the prius has the most comfortable driving position out of all these cars.

You mean like BMW seats (with Sports package)? 2013 Toyota Avalon (and Hybrid) Limited has extendable seat cushions where front edge curls up or down.

Have had my Prius for about 3 weeks now. Previous vehicle was a 2013 Altima which my wife now drives. The Altima seats were extremely comfortable. Drove the Altima yesterday and couldn't wait to get back into my Prius.

Prius front seats could be a little bit wider. Might be good idea if next gen Prius liftback (whole car) is slightly wider.

btw, Altima has steering wheel that telescoped nicely towards tall drivers, but wow does the headrest (in 2013 model) jut into back of my head, no matter how I adjusted the seat.

YUP! I feel that the prius' thigh cushion at the front of the seat is slightly higher than I what I find optimal. Otherwise no complaints.

I agree with the original poster. I think the Prius driver seat is terrible for my back. This is my wife's daily driver but when I drive it, I usually have back issues. My commute is 25 miles one-way and I find myself repositioning in the seat throughout the ride. This is disappointing since I'll be taking over this car for my commuter pretty soon. I'd be interested with any solutions.

I agree as well. The base seats in my car are quite poor and there isn't really a position where I can sit comfortably with good posture.

.... at least this tall driver, me. Here's what I've done for more driving comfort. 6'2" tall, long legged, 190 lb slim guy. Mods aren't so pretty, but they work well, at least for me.

For a long time, I complained how the 3rd Gen Prius steering wheel doesn't telescope nearly enough. How to put the seat exactly where I want it AND get a good grip on the steering wheel? For me, a 4" stack of foam on door armrest. I drive with left elbow on armrest almost all the time and grip wheel about 9 o'clock. That's how I drive and don't care about what anyone says about it :p

btw, foam pad stays in place well .... unless you really knock it ..

    camera 547.jpg camera 544.jpg
    specs: 4"L x 2" W x 2" H black neoprene glued to 4"x 3" x 2" piece. Side of wider piece adheres to door with 3M Command brand non-residue with velcro. Base also 3M Command w/o velcro.

First year, drove around with 1" foam on door. Finally, went to SF Auto Show in 2013, sat in BMW 535i, fits great. Realized I need Prius door armrest MUCH higher to get good grip on wheel.

My legs are very long, like 35" inseam. No matter what seat position, I don't get quite enough support from the seat cushion alone. I noticed in many cars with standard center console, I can rest part of my leg lightly on a console wall. So, last Summer, started building a few boards to clip to lower edge of Prius console. Not so pretty, but I prefer it in my car than not. ;)

    camera 542.jpg camera 503.jpg camera 501.jpg camera 499.jpg

Safety concern? Yes. That's why I built if of 1/4" Poplar wood and covered it with 1/2" Neoprene where my leg contacts. This definitely gets removed before going in for service!

Not necessarily for tall person, but I put up with the fabric covered hard plastic center armrest for a year and a half, then fashioned a not so pretty but functional armrest pad. It stays in place and works well. I can slide the armrest lid and pop it open without trouble.
