2008 Prius, no tail lights at all, only license plate lights

    The rear running lights (all of them including parking lights) stopped working yesterday. The only lights which come on are the license plate lights. I have break lights and turn signals, but no running lights. I checked the fuse and it seems fine. Does anyone know what the problem may be. I don't know where to trouble shoot from here.

    I would check the bulbs themselves to see if they've both burned out and if so replace them. I didn't see in your post that you did so or that you had changed the bulbs, just looking for the easiest place to start.

    I didn't check the bulbs, it didn't seem likely that all four bulbs would burn out at the same time. A few minutes ago, however, I found an old post about the same problem and it turned out that it was the bulbs. I'll check in the morning.

    There are three incandescent light bulbs in each tail light assembly: turn, reverse, and running lights. The brake lights are composed of six LEDs which are not user-replaceable.

    The problem is that the rear running lights on both sides of the car are out. Is it possible that one bulb had burnt out some time ago, and the other burnt out more recently, but you did not notice this until yesterday?

    In any event, the easiest fix is to check the bulbs and replace if needed. Good luck.
