Trying to find out of the warranty on a PiP battery on a new PiP in NH would be 100,000 or 150,000 mi. It depends on whether NH has adopted California Air Resources Board emissions standards (go figure), but I am getting conflicting information. My 2010 Prius has a 150,000 mi warranty, but the same dealer says that the PiP battery would only have 100,000. Anyone know for sure, or know how to figure it out?

I do not believe Toyota applied for a California Emission standard (the Liftback and v, with a NiMH battery are AT-PZEV, a California standard) I think the Plug in Hybrid is just Tier II Bin 3, a Federal standard.

So they do not have to be 150,000/10 even in CARB states. (same as the c, which is not 150,000/10 either)

Even if NH is a CARB state, if Toyota has not CARB certified this car, that will not matter.

United States emission standards - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

wjtracy points out I am in error, it does meet the CARB AT-PVEV standard.

To summarize, the 150k miles applies only to CARB states which includes MAINE. NH is not CARB as of the time of the PiP 2013 warranty, unless there has been a recent change of NH status. If your car is CARB certified you can get CARB 150-k warranty only if your car is registered in a CARB state. So if you are in exile in NH, you can repatriate in Maine if/when you need to, I think. Yankee doodle do.

Exactly. You must have originally purchased and originally registered the vehicle in a CARB state. There is a legal gray zone for what happens between that and when you need warranty work done if registered in a non-CARB state. The consensus is that as long as the vehicle is re-registered in a CARB state prior to a warranty claim, it should still be covered under the CARB warranty.

What about, I am thinking if the car is CARB certified, it only matters where it is registered during the repair. So if I am in Virginia (or NH) not CARB certified, I might want to purchase in MD to get CARB-certified PiP but I am thinking probably all of them may be CARB certified even in VA, so it may not matter. But then that gives me better resale value if I can sell it to a Mainer or Marylander before the 150k. I thought I had this down but it is not easy.

Yes they are all "CARB certified", they are all exactly the same. However it doesn't matter. You only get the CARB warranty in a CARB state, usually the price is artificially higher upon purchase as well.

When you go in for warranty work the first thing they do is run your VIN. They know exactly where and when it was sold. If it was sold and registered in a CARB state, the computer says you get the CARB warranty. If not, you don't. Very simple. Some dealers will only look at this and do the work. They then bill Toyota. Toyota sometimes investigates on their own to make sure warranty work is on the up and up. Otherwise dealers would be servicing things they probably didn't need to and billing Toyota. "Your gizmo-sprocket is worn badly. It is about a $2000 job, but it is free to you." What are you going to say. Lots of false claims, Toyota pays out, Toyota loses. They don't go after the customer, but the dealership. So some service centers are very smart about checking current registration. Sometimes they just look at plates to see if it is out of state or not. If they get caught giving you something outside of standard warranty but under CARB warranty when you don't deserve it, the dealership gets paid nothing. Nothing for parts, nothing for labour.

This is what I am trying to say below, I copied this language from FORD CMAX on the assusmption it also applies to Prius.

It seems to say if your car is CARB-certified, you get the CARB battery warranty if you are registered in a CARB state. It does not seem to say, for example, that you have to purchase the car in a CARB state. I am assuming most PiP's to date are CARB certified even if bought in say NH or VA which are not CARB states. I also see no language to suggest that you have to initially register in a CARB state, nor does it appear from this that one needs to keep the car in CARB certified states the whole life of car. So the OP is good to go on 150k warranty if he registers car in CARB state and if his vehicle was CARB certified (even if he initially bought and registered it in NH or VA which are not a CARB states). If it turns out PiP's bought in NH or VA are not CARB-certified, then might makes sense to purchase PiP in a CARB-state, for those of us living on a CARB/noCARB borderline. Pretty much Mason Dixon line:) .

Well I had asked Toyota not too long ago:

Response Via Email (Joanne Hahn) 03/08/2013 11:20 AM
    Dear Mr. xxx,

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

We appreciate the time you have taken to email us with your inquiry.

If you purchase a Prius with CA emissions and is registered in CA or a CARB compliant state you will receive the CA emissions warranty. If you move to a non-compliant state your vehicle will eligible under the Federal Emissions warranty.

If we can be of further assistance, please Contact Us

    Hello,

My question is if you purchase Prius in a CARB state and register it there, can you then later register it in a non-CARB state and continue to receive the longer 10year/150K mile warranty? Or must it continue to be registered in CARB compliant states to receive the CARB warranty?

    Thankyou,

The Ford literature is not as specific as Toyota's but I would be surprised if they were much different.

This is from Toyota's Warranty Manual for the PiP:

    Vehicles equipped with a California
    Certified Emission Control System that
are sold, registered and operated in
California or any state that adopts
    California emission warranty provisions
are covered by this warranty. Currently,
    Arizona, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland,
    Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York,
    Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
Vermont and Washington are the other
states to which this warranty applies.
Vehicles covered by this warranty are
also covered by the Federal Emission
    Control Warranty (see page 17).

The California Air Resources Board (CARB)
and Toyota are pleased to explain the
emission control system warranty for your
2012 vehicle. In California, new motor
vehicles must be designed, built and
equipped to meet the state’s stringent
    anti-smog standards. CARB regulations
require that Toyota must warrant the
emission control system on your vehicle
for the time periods indicated on the next
page, provided there has been no abuse,
neglect or improper maintenance of your
    vehicle.

I find the FORD warranty language to be much more clear (assuming it is correct?). The Toyota language infers the car must be bought and registered in a CARB state from the getgo, but the FORD language says the only 2 requirements are the vehicle is CARB certified and CARB registered at time of repair.

I do not see any inconsistency with FORD in the Toyota reply, we all agree that the car must be registered in a CARB state at the time of repair.

I am unsure why you think Ford and Toyota warranties are in any way related.

...its CARB rules, I think they are just both trying to say the same thing, right?

I do not. I am still unclear why anyone would. CARB requires that it last 150,000 miles/10 years. http://internetbeta.dep.state.fl.us/air/rules/ghg/california/62-285_rules_082508.pdf (Page 100)

This seems to be California's law on emissions warranty, there are no 'in state' vs 'out of state' provisions that I can find, so I continue to believe they are at the discretion of the manufacturer.

Not sure. I do not see a definite difference between FORD and TOYOTA warranty language. Just many people here interpret the TOYOTA language to say must be purchased and registered in a CARB state from Day-1. Since I do not live in CARB state, the only impact on me personally is if I buy another hybrid, I might want to purchase a CARB-certified version, if necessary I could go to MD to purchase a CARB-certified. Since I live in a non-CARB state, the only advantage to me for a CARB hybrid is re-sale value and possible exemptions from inpection requirements (my 2006 is exempt from NoVA emissions test requirements).

late to this conversation but have been wondering whether the warranty has changed since 2007. I had thought that the car had to be purchased in a CARB state and then was covered wherever it was operated. Has the way the warranty is written changed? I don't have a warranty from 2007 and cant find one.

    help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Another thing to consider is what the PiP warranty covers. When I read mine, I came away with the conclusion that the warranty covered only enough battery to make the PiP work like the regular Prius. In other words, it seemed that the warranty did not cover the EV only miles on the battery, but only the HV portion. That could mean that after 8 or 9 years, the PiP could have zero EV miles, yet still be considered good by Toyota because there was enough battery to allow it to work like a regular Prius.

Hi Scot...I have my 2006 warranty booklet. It is different wording from today's Toyota hybrid warranty, but seems to clearly say hybrid system warranty is 8-yrs/100000 miles for all except CA. At some point after 2006, the wording must have been up-dated to reflect the existence multiple CARB states.

Quoted above post I have shown the FORD hybrid warranty clearly says car must be registered in a CARB state to get 10-yr 150000 mile warranty. I presume (but I am not sure) that Toyota warranty is functionally equivalent to FORD and other hybrids.

I have both a 2005 and 2006 Prius, each of them purchased and registered in Massachusetts. Up until now, I thought I had only an 80K/8years warranty. As MA is listed as a CARB state, from my reading of these posts, it appears that my hybrid battery in both cars is warranted for 150K/10years. The 2005 is now in its 10th year. Please confirm my interpretation of these posts. And if confirmed, how can I get documentation of such from Toyota? Thanks.
