It would be a dull world if we were all the same.

Ok guys. Thanks for the good info. New info:

1.Its the rear muffler pipe. No problem there thats easy.
    2. Its the shifter is getting loose he says and I see them on ebay for like 50 billz. (dealer said it was a $427 dollar part) Yea it looks just like a little plastic toy piece. That should be easy if it just snaps into place.
    3. And if the touch screen is no more complicated then installing an old car cd player that should be easy enough.

I've done head gaskets, brakes and tie rods etc. I figure I should be able to do this stuff. I do hate taking apart interior plastic but I should be able to manage.

Last big question! She says months ago when the touch screen worked, she was averaging 44 MPG. Thats normal and acceptable right? The battery tested out ok at the toyota dealer (don't wanna replace that thing).

I see people reporting 56 mpg avg, but i assume thats with some hypermiling conscious effort.

I do all my own work till i get to an issue were the car won't run and I can't figure out whats wrong or how to fix it.
(currently my subaru legacy ski wagon sits in the driveway unable to start because of error code ER HC. )

Tricky tricky little issue without a ton of good internet support like i see on these forums.

Mpg sounds reasonable. If you do any work on the brakes the first thing is to disconnect the battery even if you are just changing pads, and under no circumstances open the bleed valves or try to bleed the brakes without asking here first.

You mentioned headlight adjustment, I'm not sure if I saw any adjustments for the headlight when I removed them last. There were only 3 bolts holding them in place, it's all stationary, no adjustment knob

There is a headlamp adjustment that looks like the edge of a small gear wheel. This can be turned with a phillips screw driver and takes many turns to give a small adjustment.

Looks hard to get to. I would think this knob wouldn't need adjustment unless you've gotten into an accident. Removing the headlights shouldn't change it's position.

Oh to clarrify, that was just the dealer saying telling the seller that at this many miles the older prius's often don't self adjust the headlights correctly and that the motors or something needs repair. Either way these are ok the dealer said.

But so 44 MPG on prius doesn't cause any concern for you guys. You'd go ahead and pull the trigger on $2300???

You can get to it quite easily from the top.
If the car has self leveling headlamps they are HID and the car is likely a touring version with 16 inch wheels, fog lamps, and navigation.
Headlamp leveling problems is usually due to corroded leveling pot on rear suspension.

You're right about the HID's but the touring version didn't come to the US until 2007. It likely does have fogs and premium stereo too.

I would pull the trigger at $2300 and it seems you are more mechanically inclined than myself.

Fuelly will help you get a good idea of what's normal in the Prius. As you can see, plenty of people average 44MPG or even less. If you don't try or have crappy conditions, 44MPG is perfectly reasonable.

A little practice with 40+ psi in the tires, and you will get better than 44 mpg.

I bought it guys and I feel greaaat about it. Its crazy how a 9 year old car with 180,000 miles, a broken touch screen that partly disables the heat/ ac, a leaking exhaust and a shifter that clicks like something is jambing it can feel like such a deal at $2200 bucks, but it defintiely does!

The car rode like a dream. Can't wait to see what kind of MPG's i'm gonna get. I gased it up and am going to check it with the old odometer reading/ gallons consumed method.

Ordered a new touch screen today. Put some best offers in on exhaust systems.

Thanks for the input! Glad i pulled the trigger. Its a comfy fun car to cruise in. I'm taking this baby to 300k hopefully
