Disclaimer: IMPORTANT: THIS PROCEDURE IS FOR BRAND NEW FOBS PURCHASED FROM A TOYOTA DEALER.

A GENUINE TOYOTA DEALER OR A GENUINE TOYOTA DEALER THAT SELLS PARTS ONLINE IS THE ONLY AUTHORIZED DISTRIBUTOR OF NEW FOBS. MOST FOBS ON EBAY ARE SECOND HAND OR FACTORY REJECTS AND WILL NOT WORK FOR FULL SKS FUNCTIONALITY (although some dealers do sell on Ebay).

THIS IS ONLY FOR GEN II PRIUS VEHICLES. It is commonly referred to as the "chicken dance".

I am confident this procedure is 100% correct with no errors or guesswork (foolproof). If it isn't, please let me know.

    Action steps are BOLD

    PROCEDURE A
This procedure (steps 1. through 5.) is to be used for both the black and chrome logo key fob. This will program the fob to Start/stop engine while it is inserted into the key port. All new fobs should be programmed for this regardless of logo or SKS functionality
    -------------------
    1. Get into the car, close and unlock all doors and ensure the car is off
    2. Insert old fob (your fob that currently works) into slot and remove it 4 times in a row, and insert it a fifth time but leave it in there!
    2. Open and close driver door 6 times.
    3. Remove old fob from slot. Car is in fob programming mode at this point. Red anti-theft light remains on.
    4. Insert new fob and leave in the slot for a full minute. Watch the blinking red anti-theft light on the dashboard. When it stops flashing and goes dark, your new fob is all set.
    5. Remove the new fob and you're done with the START/STOP portion of programming ( if you have SKS, proceed to PROCEDURE B don't have SKS, proceed to PROCEDURE C).

    PROCEDURE B
This procedure (steps 1. through 10.) is for chrome logo key fobs and vehicles with SKS functionality

Lock/unlock doors remotely + SMART KEY functionality
    --------------------
    1. Open the driver door and leave it open with no fob in slot (ensure the driver door is unlocked). Other doors can be locked or unlocked, it doesn't matter.
Complete step 2 within 5 seconds
    2. Insert old fob into slot and remove it twice.
Complete steps 3. and 4. within 40 seconds of completing step 2.

    3. Close and open driver door twice.
    4. Insert and remove old fob once.
    Complete steps 5., 6., 7. and 8. within 40 seconds of completing step 4.
    5. Close and open driver door twice again.
    6. Insert old fob in slot and close door.
    7. Without pressing the brake, press power button, wait a second, press it again, wait a second, press it a third time to turn car back off.
    8. Remove old fob from slot. You'll be in "add mode" at this point. Within 3 seconds, the car should lock and unlock doors to verify it is in add mode. (the precise number of times the car locks/unlocks the door is model specific - but it should do it at least once). If it does not cycle the locks, return to step 1. otherwise proceed to step 9.

Steps 9.a. and 9.b. should be started within 40 seconds of completing step 8.
9a: Press and hold the Lock and Unlock key (simultaneously) on the OLD/MASTER fob. (a couple of seconds should pass and the locks will cycle once. If you do not get this cycle, it is likely due to a weak CR 2032 battery in your fob. Replace the battery in your old fob and try again).

9b: Press both the Lock and Unlock key (simultaneously) on the NEW fob. Hold for about 1.5 seconds (several users have reported it being necessary to execute this step twice, if your first go around does not indicate success, try it again and execute this step twice. Please post what worked in the comments below).
9c: Within three seconds, press the lock key on the NEW fob. If successful the lock/unlock will cycle once indicating success (It may take a while for the lock/unlock cycle. I've seen it happen just as I was ready to say, "well, it didn't work". If you wait for a long time (a long time being more than a minute) and get no cycle at all, complete step 10. and test to see if the SKS functions of your new fob work. If they do, pls report that on this thread).
9d. - If you need or want to program another "new" fob, repeat steps 9. a. 9.b. and 9.c. for the next new fob. If done programming fobs, proceed to step 10.
    10. To end this programming, open then close the driver's door or put the fob in the slot.

    PROCEDURE C
This procedure (steps 1. through 13.) is for black logo key fobs and vehicles without SKS functionality

    1. Open the driver door with no fob in slot and the doors unlocked.
    2. Insert old fob into slot and remove it twice within 5 seconds.
    3. Close and open driver door twice.
    4. Insert and remove old fob once.
    5. Close and open driver door twice again.
    6. Insert old fob in slot and close door.
    7. Without pressing the brake, press power button, wait a second, press it again, wait a second, press it a third time to turn car back off.
    8. Remove old fob from slot. You'll be in "add mode" at this point.
    9. Car should lock and unlock doors twice to verify it is in add mode.
    10. Press and hold both buttons on new fob simultaneously for a second and a half.
    11. Within 3 seconds, press just the lock button on new fob.
    12. Car should respond with one quick lock/unlock to verify that the new fob is all set. If the car responds with two lock/unlocks, that means it didn't work. Either try again, your fob is bad or, you have too many fobs assigned to the car.
    13. To end this programming, open then close the driver's door or put fob in the slot.

Here are the part #'s for the fobs:
OEM Fob Part # for smart access is 89994-47061
OEM Fob Part # for non-smart access is 89070-47180.

PS: Practice these steps first (dry run).

I have been editing and improving this procedure for months now and this is the result of many peoples hard work and effort. Thank you to all who have contributed.

Here's a video (I did not make this video and its not me):

This is great, thanks. I have a newly acquired '07 with a single smart key. Knowing I can program a new one myself is important.

Question: Can a non-smart key (black logo) be programmed to full non-smart functionality? In other words, lock/unlock with the buttons and start/stop by inserting in the dash. The first section above indicates start/stop but not lock/unlock. If so, can this be done with new and used black-logo fobs? I'm looking at how I can get a second fob as inexpensively as possible.

To the best of my knowledge, the black logo fob will lock/unlock the doors but I'm not positive. If you have an SKS car, you should use an SKS fob. If you have a non SKS car, you should use a Non SKS fob. Idk about the lock/unlock or used black logo fob. The procedure is for a brand new key fob as indicated in all caps. If you go used, I can't guarantee you anything. In reality, how much cheaper can you get? A new SKS fob is $159.23 from the dealer, a new black logo fob is $143.11. The cheapest used black logo fob I can locate is $129.99 for a total savings of $13.12. Why would you go with a used fob?

I really don't want this thread to become a debate about what will and will not work (and all the possibilities). I know a new fob (purchased from a dealer) will work. Nor do I want to elongate this thread with theories about used and Non SKS fobs on an SKS car. It simply leads to more confusion and confusion is what I'm trying to avoid and the sole purpose of creating this thread.
Here's the bottom line for all. A new SKS fob (chrome logo) will work on an SKS car, a new non SKS Fob (black logo) will work on a non SKS car. Used fobs are risky and IMO, should not be considered. The only authorized seller of new fobs is the dealer. All other sources are likely factory rejects or used and likely will not work.

Let's keep it simple please. If you have a success story, pls post.

Sorry, I didn't mean to muck up the works. :( It makes sense to keep this simple. If you want, I can take my post down here and post it in a new thread.

I had assumed that I could get a used black logo remove/key for substantially less. I thought I saw one on eBay for ~$40. If not, you're right it makes no sense.

Anyway, say the word and I'll pull my posts and you can pull your response and we can clean this up. :D

This is an amazing hack! Thanks for posting. For those in the LA area who want a little help, I can heartily recommend a company called Pop-a-Lock. They just programmed two keys for me, total cost was $100. The technician had some sort of laptop looking device that he plugged into the ODB port. The process took about 20 minutes. They will also cut the metal keys for $25/ea.

Please no advertisements or recommendations here. Let's keep this thread clean. I welcome members to post their experiences but we don't need to hear about a company in the LA area that cuts keys for $25. Seriously? $25??? That's outrageous. The purpose of this thread is to avoid fees. This is for the DIYer.

And... just so everyone knows, many places will cut your key for a small fee (way less than $25).

After many tries going through this "chicken dance" and getting advice from usnavystgc, I can report success in programming my new fob for my 2004 Prius (SKS)! It took many tries because my old fob had an old battery. When I replaced the battery, I got the process to work on the first try. I have full use of the new fob - starting the car, locking/unlocking remotely using the fob buttons, and locking/unlocking standing near the car with the fob in my pocket. Many thanks, usnavystgc! I bought my fob from a Toyota dealership. They cut the key for no extra charge. They were going to charge anywhere from $60 to $120 to program the electronics. My sweetie (who lost my fob in the first place) is happy to have saved this $$.

Ok, we learned an important lesson from Onesolargal's experience. If the battery is weak in your old/master fob, it will not let you program a new fob. This will be evidenced by not getting the lock/unlock cyle after completing step 9.a.. If you do not get this cycle, replace the battery in your old fob and try again. In Onesolargal's case, her fob was working fine however it had a weak (but not dead) battery. She replaced the battery and was able to successfully program her SKS fob on the first try.

One more success story to report. I was able to program a new sks key fob for my 2005 this weekend. The procedure worked flawlessly on the first try. A great testimony to all who helped me with getting this procedure to this level. Thank you all.

Another success story with many thanks to usnavy. Worked 1st time with my 2004 and an ebay purchased SKS fob. Step 9c was not immediately followed by a lock sequence for whatever reason, so I repeated just that step and everything worked after completion. If anyone else is leery of receiving a used fob advertised as new on ebay, I recommend user jjlewis01. $150 shipped and based on my success I assume it was new, unprogrammed, as advertised. Thank you and if you ever pass through Idaho, I'll buy you a beer with some of the $200 I saved today.

Dealer told me their key cost was $500 and that I likely wouldn't be able to find a locksmith to program my key if I bought one myself. Bought a key on Amazon and did the chicken dance successfully. In the process, I got hung up on step 9 a few times, but I think that's because I didn't wait long enough for the final lock/unlock sequence (took about 50-60 seconds). usnavy, thanks for sharing with us.

Fantastic! Worked perfectly on my 2007 Prius with a new key purchased $120 online from a Toyota dealer in Ohio.

My wife and I had been living dangerously, sharing one key for over a year. We have a 2nd car with several keys but Prius was sometimes blocking the driveway with only vague idea of where she left the key! Next purchase: key locator.

Thanks so much for posting this. I knew there had to be a better way and found your solution after looking through other options. Not sure what a dealer or locksmith may have charged here in Atlanta area, glad I never got to the point of calling around.

What dealer in OH sells the key for $120? That's a fantastic price. At that price, you can resell them locally and make a profit LOL

"9a press and hold the lock and unlock key on the old fob" means press and hold them both?

I believe you only have to press the "lock" button on the "old" fob, the new fob is the one you would need to hold lock and unlock.

It's been over a year since I did this last, but that's how I remember it.

I bought a key (with silver logo) from my local dealership and after performing the sequence my new key works. Thanks a lot for posting the instructions and saving me some $$. Especially when it took me less than 5 minutes to program it. Thanks again. :D

Thanks to usnavysgtc for these great instructions! I successfully programmed my SKS-capable Gen II and new fob (purchased from an online Toyota parts supplier on the east coast for $110 including shipping), but only after I replaced the low battery in the new fob that I received from that parts supplier.

Couldn't figure out why step 9c wouldn't succeed, so eventually ran a voltage meter on the supplied battery and discovered that it was a tad below 3 volts. New one was closer to 3.3 volts, and that did the trick.

One other small point: if I'm reading the Procedure B instructions correctly, the door is closed after step 6 and not opened thereafter, so when you get to step 10, perhaps it should state "To end this programming, open, then close the driver door or put the fob in the slot."

Regardless, thanks again to usnavysgtc and this wonderful PriusChat community.

Where'd you get a new fob that cheap? I need one and $150 plus shipping is the best I've found.
