Im sorry i forgot to say 99 of the 100 miles are all freeway.. so the PiP wouldnt make a difference for me as i need the gas motor to run 99% of the time.

Reports are that the PiP gets better mileage even without using the electric drive. However, even if it didn't, there are other PHEVs and EVs that would get you much improved mileage.
You were bemoaning that the 100mpg cars aren't available, I am simply saying they do exist for most people. And even in your very rare case the cars do exist.

That's not how PiP works. You still get the vendor of the plug, even at 70 mph... which is even more true in the winter.

Details about next-gen Toyota Prius emerge - Autoblog

Still smoke and mirrors for 2015...an excerpt: " Toyota will aim for at least an 8 percent improvement in fuel economy in the next Prius, which would increase it to 58 miles per gallon city and 52 mpg highway."

Just an observation for this test unit...the interior shots essentially shows off the Lexus CT200h interior - dash, shift knob, instrument cluster, etc.

They'd need to completely redesign the CT200h too if they plan on using that dash for the 2015 Prius...and the CT200h just went through a mid gen refresh for 2014. I think I could live without the eyebrow dash we currently have. It's distracting and way too high, if I'm honest.

I actually hope they don't make the car too light because part of the nice part of the Prius is how planted it feels, comapred to the Prius C and the Honda Fit (car I came from). So unless they can make the car lighter but retain the same planted feel...I say work on making other parts more efficient, aerodynamic etc. with less of a focus on weight reduction.

Where are the 100mpg cars, or where are the cars that will get you 100mpg?

The average driver will get 100mpg (without counting electricity) in:

    Leaf
    MiEV
    Model S
    Smart EV
    Volt
    Focus EV

If the average driver can also plug in at work, either with a level 1 or 2 charger you can add:

    CMax energi
    PiP
    BMW i3

I am sure I missed some others.
Your contention that big oil has stopped 100mpg cars is simply off base.
At worse, the slowed it down some. More likely they influenced regulations to give them an edge by subsidizing oil exploration, drilling, etc.

If they could prevent fuel efficient cars, why not prevent pure electrics?

A car isn't a piece of art. I don't care a bit how it looks.

Hi Lee, surely you must like the car you drive! Why did you get the Prius, for the mpg? To be honest, there are some really ugly cars out there and in my neck of the woods, to drive up in such a car you'd be a laughing stock! Mind you, I've taken some s**t for buying a Prius, but so what, I love it!!

i guess my question is.. if i do 99% of freeway driving @ 70mph does the plug in cars actually give a person like me the 100mpg or is it going to be much less as i cant run on electric only on the freeway?

Some will, some won't. You can't say any car would for all driving patterns.
The PiP would not is your trip is 100 miles, 99 of which are highway.
The Volt would if you could plug in at work as the Volt stays on electric power at those speeds.

The others I am less familiar with so I am not sure.

All I am saying is that for more average driving patterns many cars will deliver 100mpg.
For your particular driving pattern, only a couple of cars meet that.

That is not the fault of the oil companies, it is a result of your driving pattern.

This thread seems to have a tendency to lapse into tangents .... 8%, 10%, 20% ICE efficiency, 100 mpg, PIP's, attractive or ugly. I suppose it is natural since the subject of this thread pertains to a topic that Toyota has revealed so little about, and what has been said, seems contradictory.

I think Toyota should just call the 2010-2014 Prius a 2010 (LOL) ..... after all, they made no changes or upgrades. In my state, property taxes are reduced considerably once a vehicle is 3 years old. Why buy a 2014 and pay higher taxes when it is identical to a 2010 with lower taxes. After all, Ford is going to manufacture a "new 32 roadster." (Don't jump on me over that ... I know it is not a complete car, just the sheet metal)

Called the 3rd Gen :) Which came out 2009. I bought mine in 2010 May which was before the supposed 2011 came out.

Then 2012 had C, PiP and V, right?

So much speculation. Would it be smart for Toyota just keep it hush more? Or do you think they would be served better to drip some details here and there. The problem is if it's not really coming out at the end of this year, they probably would keep it quiet.

And I wonder when they said they'll reveal the Gen IV this year at an auto show if they really mean a "concept" and then the real thing developed next year. I sure hope they don't stretch their development because of wireless induction charging.

There's a loss of energy there and although convenient I think of it more of a luxury and not a needful thing. Heck, release that on the Gen IV's second year.

I want to see what it looks like, how it's going to achieve more mpg, how long can I go without gas straight...and if I should use the PiP version?

Thanks Toyota. Dianne? Please respond :p

This is common with every car company and model. You aren't thinking about their bottom line. That is all they think about. You are only thinking how you want the latest and best...for cheap. If they changed and upgraded every car every year, prices of new cars would be substantially higher than they are now.

didnt know the Volt would drive on electric at freeway speeds. I could for sure plug it in at work.. shoot... that would have been a better buy for me!
Its rated at 98MPG highway with plugin

Many different strategies are being taken. This is one of the reasons I have been much more optimistic about the plugin market this time around.
The consumers have different choices as companies are providing different solutions. And competition is good for us, the consumer:)

markabele - The "(LOL)" identified my comment as a less than serious suggestion. However, most manufacturers will "tweak" the suspension, or some other component that reveals itself to be in need of refinement. To the best of my knowledge, the 2014 model hatchback Prius is essentially identical inside and out with the 2010, except for the visual design of the tail light assembly. I guess the 2010 was so perfect, it didn't need any modifications?

inferno - The G3 was introduced in calendar year 2009, but it is a 2010 model year vehicle.

They made some great subtle changes with some of the information display stuff. Didn't do your homework?
