Totaled car according to insurance company..curbed it 2008 Prius.. (no structural damage.._) just a lot of parts change out.. 2 rims, 2 tires, rear axle beam (*possibly the wheel hub and bearing), front suspension strut passenger side, inner and out tie rods passenger side, lower control arm passenger side, *possibly the wheel and hub assemble passenger side, and possible front cross member)

you get the point.. question is yes i can fix all this my self low end of $1,350 (parts free labor-$1,700)

car is valued about a bout $6,500-$8,000.. which i might get from insurance company to get another car.*i will be talking off my after market stuff in the car and put on new on..cameras, Screens 3 of them, dvd player, custom springs, custom sway bars.. things such as this

my question is .. for the high miler club people, been looking at Prius' 2006-2009 with 110k-180k

any major concerns about buying high millage.. (*yes i fix my own cars.. when i can .. ) so i save a lot of money on parts and Labor. just want some more opinions :) Thanks

Every car has it's own story. You can't base anything on mileage and price. Some can be high mileage and great with many parts already replaced. Some have low miles and need all kinds of parts to run properly. You will just have to look at the cars and determine what is needed and if you can do the repairs.

KBB and Edmunds will be a good indicator for price, everything else is up to the specific car and condition.

Note that your "totaled" Prius may have more value as a parts car that the insurance company realizes. Check what they would charge you to keep it and call Steve at Prius hybrids sales and service Scottsburg Indiana to see what he would pay for it.

A Prius at 150k or more is a high risk investment. Many components are nearing their end of service life. Toyota has this number at 180k miles. You may not have any problems, but you also may have many problems.

More common failures at high mileage are:

    Traction Battery
Engine burning oil at higher rate
    Transaxle can fail
Multiple ECUs on the car can fail

Many of these repairs can easily run into the 4 digits, even if you were to replace them yourself.

$500 is a steal considering all the valuable parts are still intact.

Yes my issue is storing it to part out. Would have to sell the car as a whole. Again I could do all the labor and fix the issues. The thing I thought about after doing such is I would have to sell it later on. And will not be worth much. Also considering if I do it my self it's not considered a rebuilt title. Stupid laws says go spend lots of money and have a facility do it

If you can't store the car parts, then you already know parting out isn't an option.

If I were in your position, I would look for a Prius with a bad traction battery. That would be less expensive to acquire and you already have the replacement part (known working part from a late model).

Yes. That's what I would do. I would be comfortable with an 08 battery to last a few years.

I just totaled mine. State farm paid out a little over $8k, less deductible, I got around $7500. I was pretty happy with that for an 04, but mine was a clean 04. Had 124k miles.

No structural damage confirmed by a reputable frame and alignment shop? I,m not talking about your everyday body shop, but a shop that specializes in frame work and that is their main line of business.

The reason for my question, frame / unibody damage can be oh so minor that an average shop would not catch it.

A good frame shop would, even if you had to shell $$ out of your own pockets to have it done.

Best to know what real damage you are up against before sinking additional cash, time, and labor into your Prius.

Well if you got 7500. I have 08 with 109789. I should get more ? My thing is I could. A. Use the money and get another Prius. B. buy the old one back, repair it. Get rebuilt title. And sell it. Make money. And be a happy camper ? The autobeyours. Does that but for some reason he gets a lot for them with a rebuilt title?

That's because Steve (AutoBeYours) has a great track record of his rebuilt (salvaged) Prii working well with few problems and he backs them up is problems occur.

JeffD - a satisfied AutoBeYours customer for parts and one repair while traveling through the Midwest in my Prius.

Following if i chose to do it my self
yes i did, but i look at it this way

    1. lets say i get $8,500 or so for the car.. Fine that $$ in my pocket
    2. Tow to my house (title goes to salvage) in GA can't drive that and it wouldn't be insured ...Need a car to get around. I don't like renting cars due to rental scams even though i'm in one. Insurance company is paying for it.
    3. i buy parts .. costing $

    Front Suspension Passenger Side

    1 Front Sub-Frame Cross Member Suspension= $ 275.00 -$500.00 - $1,200.00
    1 Front Wheel Hub and Bearing Assembly= $34.75 - $80.00
2 Front Strut Assembly Left/Right=$55.00 - $150 (with coil) each (you do them in pairs)
    1 Lower Control Arm/Ball joint= $42.89
    1 Outer Tie Rod= $15.00
    1 Inner Tie Rod= $17.00
    2 Front CV axle Left/Right side= $ 75.00 - $100.00 each
    1 Knuckle Right side =$99+
2 Curbed rims = $ No price on these yet.. they were originally about $525 each Rays Super Eco's

    Rear Suspension
    1 Rear- Suspension Cross Member Suspension= $425- $1400
    1 Rear- Wheel Hub/Bearing= $35.00- $80.00

    4. Time to do it.. not to bad of a thing (keep in mind according to GA its not recommended that you fix it your self due to the next matter) If you do it your self you need before pictures and after pictures and receipts for the repair.. kind of hard if i buy parts on ebay. yes obviously there is proof I did get the parts.

    5. Must get a certified appraiser to look at car to sign off on paper work to deem it safe on public roads which has a fee to do. It ranges depending on who comes out or have it towed there. (car can't be driven there)

    6. if all goes well you get your title to go from salvage to "Rebuilt"

    7. next insure car.. they won't go more then 50 % of the value to insure if its work 8k they do 4k insurance

    8. resell when it comes... harder to sell this car.. even at 50% off from price if it wasn't rebuilt

I haven't bought anything yet. I am still waiting for the insurance checks and getting it all handled. I am thinking about stepping up to at 3rd gen car. Time will tell. :)

I did stop and look at an 07 with 70k miles today at a Ford/Mazda dealer. It looked like garbage and they wanted $10,500 for it. My 04 was way nicer. Makes me sad.
