I hope im posting this in appropriate forum but i wanted an expert opinion. i have a 2010 Prius with 45,000 miles on it.

my Prius started experiencing electrical issues (car alarm going off every 30 minutes, door censor not recognizing that the door was closed, locks locking and unlocking while driving, interior lights refusing to turn off because a "door was open") all of these issues showed up all at once. I immediately took it into the dealership (within a few hours of it going haywire) and asked them to take a look at it.

Here is where the story gets iffy. I specifically asked that if there was no one working on the car to have the battery disconnected so as to not run it down. the tech hemmed and hawwed at me telling that if it gets low they can always re-charge it. I told him i didnt care and to make sure its disconnected. (they told me it would be a few days before they could take a look at it.)

two weeks go by and they still haven't found the root of the problem and now I have to pay out of pocket for a brand new auxiliary battery (go figure) because it "went bad."

I spoke with his manager about how upset i was that I was buying a new battery when I had experienced NO issues with it before leaving it with them. I demanded to know if my requests had been followed so he calls the tech in and asks him if my battery had been disconnected, he gets real nervous real quick and says yes (covering his nice person) and the manager turned around and told me that the batteries only have a shelve life of 3-5 years and that i am already in the time span for it to die so they couldn't be at fault for it.

My question here is, am i being screwed?

and btw, my car STILL isn't fixed and its been three weeks now with no solution.

Yes, the 12v battery can go within the time specified by the dealer. Maybe replacing it would "fix" your problems? Also, have you had the Prius since new or bought it used? Hopefully no water (flood) damage in the wiring/electronics.

i purchased the car used with 35,000 miles on it. they have already replaced the battery and told me it was "fixed" and gave me my car back at week 2, before i even got the car back home all the issues reappeared and i had to take it back. now they're telling me that they want to take apart the entire rear end of the car (for a fee of $600 of course) to look for electrical shortages that might not even be there

The car isnt fixed. They tell me it is the first time they have ever experienced this issue. they call the car haunted. all of the door censors are good, they disconnected the car alarm to see if it was causing electrical shortages. they've taken apart every door looking for a loose ground. also the issues dissapear and reappear on their own. they noticed that if they slam the trunk door down really hard sometimes the problems come back but not every time.

for example, i stopped at a gas station to fill the car up when they gave it back to me and as soon as i started the car again the door censors began going off again.

not a salvage title. it has been rear ended, clipped in the back left corner, all damages were fixed by the insurance company.

Well that's the risk of buying cars that have gotten into an accident and repaired. Electrical problems can be tough to figure out, but I wouldn't waste money looking anywhere else other than the repaired section of the car. A 2010 model Prius shouldn't have issues with electrical, unless it's been replaced/repaired by someone that didn't do it correctly.

If you know the body shop that did the work, maybe you can bring it back to have them look at it. It may be covered under warranty if insurance paid for the work.

$400 for the dianostics and battery replacement is about right. $300 for the battery part and labor, another $100 for diagnostic for the electrical problem. I would say you got a discount.....

As more details unfold, it's becoming clear where the problem likely lies. It appears to be related to the accident and repairs made.

i have since moved out of
working on it as we speak. already have an adjuster going out to take a look at it.

    VERY INTERESTING UPDATE:
I attempted to make contact with the district manager to speak to him about my suspicions about the battery. Sadly he wasnt available due to being out of town so i left my name and number with a gal on the phone. 30 minutes later the dealership called to inform me that any additional repairs to my car will be done free of charge regardless of whether the offending insurance company was liable. guilty conscience maybe? needless to say im a happy camper now.

I'm happy for you. I would still like to know the outcome of what is wrong with the car. I don't know why the dealer is accepting responsibility for the repair.....false diagnostic and they are owning up to it?
